"Dr. Francis "Frank" McConaughy
 wrote more than seventy-five articles between 6 May 1891 and 9
December 1893. These articles, detailing his recollections of life in
the Ligonier Valley were published in the Ligonier, PA "Echo" newspaper.

"In reference to schools and schoolmasters in my experience and
observation from early in the twenties up to 1839...
"The next school I remember was on the northwest corner of the Pollock land...
"This school was in charge of Master Elder, a rather grave looking
old gent who commanded strict obedience. His son Joseph                        (Joseph Elder, b. abt 1798-d.1874  - buried Unity Presb Cem)
settled near Pleasant Unity and also followed teaching.                                   father: William Elder d. 1830
He was well versed in mathematics and
surveying, and some college students from the valley and
elsewhere went to him for instruction."

Most of these had farm teams which were used on the road
when not needed on the farm...
Daniel McCoy, Joseph Elder and a brother
