Louisine Elder Havemeyer (1855-1929) was born to wealthy merchant
George W. Elder and wife Mathilda Adelaide Waldron in New York
(The Havemeyers: Impressionism Comes to America).
Mr. Elder had assets in the sugar industry because his brother was partners with Henry O. Havemeyer.
When George W. Elder died tragically at the age of forty-two,
Mathilda did not remarry but instead took Louisine and her sisters to Europe.
Here Louisine made important  friends and developed her collecting habits.
Louisine later married Henry O. Havemeyer, advocated for the women's rights movement,
and raised a family.

GEORGE W. ELDER passenger accommodations blueprint, 1890 April 30
The National Park Service
SAFR 21359
1 Folder, 1 Item, 1 page
Blueprint showing the passenger accommodations for the steamship S.S. GEORGE W. ELDER,
dated April 30, 1890 and depicts the main deck.
S.S. GEORGE W. ELDER was built by Roach
& Sons in Chester, Pennsylvania for the Oregon S.S. Co. in 1874.
The ship was once chartered
by the Pacific Mail S.S. Co.
H. Harriman refitted for his 1899 U.S.
The document predates the
ship’s most famous voyage, the Harriman Alaska Expedition of 1899.

Builders names:
Reaney, Son & Archbold,
later John Roach & Sons,
later Delaware River Iron Shipbuilding Company,
later Chester Shipbuilding Company,
later Merchant Shipbuilding Corporation (Chester PA and Bristol PA)
Record of Pre-WWII Shipbuilding
Merchant Shipbuilding was developed by W. Averell Harriman on a
site that had been a shipyard at least since 1859, first as Reaney, Son & Archbold (1859-1870),
then as John Roach & Sons (1870-1887), then as Delaware River Iron Shipbuilding Company (1887-1907).
(The data for these earlier years are incomplete.)
The yard was revived in 1917 as Chester Shipbuilding before being acquired
by Harriman in 1919 and renamed Merchant Shipbuilding.
Like Hog Island, the yard was designed to assemble ships from parts fabricated by others.
Constrained in Chester, Harriman built a second yard in Bristol,
upstream from Philadelphia and also designed to assemble ships from parts fabricated elsewhere.
The ships were all of a single design, 401 feet long by 54 feet wide, with a nominal deadweight of 8,750 tons.
After the war, Harriman's company, American Ship & Commerce Corporation,
bought Cramp Shipbuilding in Philadelphia and closed both the Merchant Shipbuilding yards.
