History

To preserve the history and traditions of Americas regular, reserve, National Guard, volunteer, and militia land forces the U.S. Army established the Military History Research Collection in June 1967 at historic Carlisle Barracks.  Renamed the U.S. Army Military History Institute on 1 April 1977, USAMHI is the Army's official central repository for historical source material.

Holdings

USAMHI holds over nine million items that document the history of the U.S. Army and military history.  Collection includes: books, rare books, periodicals, photographs, manuscripts (diaries, letters, memoirs), military publications and manuals, maps, and oral histories.
