John McGregor's index is a double entry one. In most cases each document is entered twice, once under the surname of the first individual and once under the surname of the second individual. By comparing both entries, ambiguities in handwriting and unclear images may often be resolved.

In the transcription of John McGregor's index, all dates have been rationalized to a single format. Abbreviated document types have been rationalized to consistent forms in order that a could be constructed. E.g. The terms "Last Will & Test." and "Last Will & Testament" in the index have both been transcribed as "Will, Last & Testament". Names in the transcription have been expressed as "LastName, FirstName MiddleInitial" in order to facilitate indexing. In McGregor's index the first individual's name was entered as "LastName, MiddleInitial FirstInitial" and the second individual's name was entered a "FirstInitial MiddleInitial LastName". This change in sequence of initials has made transcription difficult and you should not place significance on the sequence of initials without first verifying the original image.
