(385) Benjamin Franklin Coleman was the third and youngest son of Charles. His first born was daughter, (407) Margaret Jane Coleman Gray Hickman was born 4/25/1840 in what was then Bledsoe County, TN, near the present communities of Lewis Chapel and Flat Top Mountain, TN.  She grew up on Walden's Ridge and moved with her family to Bakewell, TN, in her late teens sometime in the mid-1850's.  There she met and married William Brownlow "Tobe" Gray of Bakewell.  Tobe was born 3/30/1834, in Tennessee.  Margaret Coleman was known as "Black Grandma" to her grand- children due to her dark complexion.

Tobe was a well known farmer in the Bakewell community, owning a good bit of land.  One substantial plot of land was 322 acres on Walden's Ridge lying on the banks of Opposum Creek in Bakewell he bought from the estate of Ephram Hughes on 5/21/1868.  Tobe's name also appears several times in the Hamilton County Court records as administrator to wills, overseeing the well-being of orphaned minors, etc.  A tribute to his good standing in the community.

Tobe died on 12/23/1871, in Bakewell, at the age of 37 years, 8 months and 22 days.  He was buried in the Hughes Cemetery in Bakewell.  Margaret managed with the help of her father, Benjamin F. Coleman, until she remarried.

On 10/7/1877, she married Henry Hickman in Bakewell, TN.  Henry was born 9/29/1828, in Bakewell.  He was the son of William H. and Elizabeth Hickman, early settlers of the Bakewell community.  Henry was also the uncle of Floyd Hickman, husband of Ida Sims, granddaughter of Elizabeth Coleman, who was Margaret's 1st cousin, who are covered elsewhere in this book.  Henry was a well known and substantial farmer in Bakewell and was a widower when he married Margaret.  Henry and Margaret's farm of several hundred acres was on Opposum Creek in Bakewell, a farm they were to live on the rest of their lives.  They worshipped in the Presbyterian Church where Henry was a ruling elder.

(407) Margaret Jane Coleman appears in the photo below:
