On your question concerning their living in Marion County MS, I found these notes:

Arthur died about (before) May 1769. His will is recorded in Edgecomb
Co., NC in 1770. Sarah, his wife granted administration of her
husband's estate and the sale of his estate was ordered. Listed on
his will was his wife Sarah and orphans: Mary, Sarah, Charles, Jesse,
Authur, John, and grandson Arthur, son of John. Sarah was appointed
guardian.
Wednesday, Jan 18, 1775 John Hedgepeth, orphan of Arthur Hedgepeth chose
Thomas Sanders as his Guardian. Jan. 19, 1775 Mary Hedgepeth, orphan of
Arthur Hedgepeth chose Michael Horn her Guardian.

Arthur Hedgepeth purchased 160 acres on Great Swamp in Edgecomb Co.
NC. They resided in Nash Co. Issue: 1) Arthur, 2) Tabetha, 3) Agatha, 4)
Penniah. All of John's children were born in NC. Arthur
married Sophia Bunda ca 1830 in NC. Tabetha married William Taylor,
Jr. 5 Dec 1823 in Edgecomb Co., NC. She died Arba, Wayne, IN.
Agatha married William Coleman 14 Nov 1820 in NC. Penniah married
Jesse Taylor 4 Jan 1831 in Edgecomb Co., NC.

The land John Hedgepeth purchased Oct 18, 1782 on the north side
of Conentnea(Conteninia) Creek was given to his son Arthur. The will of John appears Sept
4, 1816 (Bk. E, P.337). Wife, Elizabeth, land 82 l/2 A.

south side of road. Bequeath $120 to buy 2 horses, sell my horses,

Son: Arthur, Mother's land after death. 250 A track in Naqhs Co.
where Mary Sanders (sis of John) lives and 2 negro's to be sold and
returns divided between daughters Tabitha, Agatha and Penniah.
Exr. William Horn, Bartley Deans. Wit. Eli Mercer, Litha Hedgepeth.

Jesse Hedgepeth Sr., son of Arthur died ca 1808 in Robeson Co. NC.
He had two known sons 1) John Hedgepeth born in VA 12 June 1768,
d 11 Dec 1854. He married Rody ?? b ca 1771 d 13 Feb 1841.
2) Jesse Hedgepeth Jr. married Alice Ward 15 Oct 1818, daughter of
William Ward from NC. Jesse Jr. moved to Lawrence Co MS in 1813
with Mr and Mrs Byrd (Bird). He went back to NC in 1818 for his
bride. He then moved his family to Marion Co., MS in 1819 and was
there in 1820. William Ward the father of Alice also moved to Marion
Co., MS where he remained the rest of his life. Jesse Jr. moved his
family to Law. Co. MS where they raised their family and lived the
remainder of their lives.

This information comes from part of a publication, pp 369-381, that was
copied. I am sorry that I have been unable to obtain the name of the
publication, but am still trying to find it.

Hope there is a little something here that you might not have had.

Thanks, Lori. I have a younger Coleman
Nichols in my ancestry b. about 1800 in North Carolina.
So far, I've been unable to find who his father was. I've
wondered if he was somehow related to Coleman who
married Martha Pierce Godwin.

A Nichols reseacher sent
me a map of old Edgecombe, NC, showing the streams
and marked with where some Nichols families lived.
(This area is now located in Wilson County, NC, and all these
creeks and swamps are near one another.)
The Nichols families were:

1. Jeremiah Nichols on Marsh Swamp, 1762
2. Coleman Nichols on Great Swamp, 1754
3. Isaac Nichols on Contentnea Creek, 1761
4. Moses Coleman on Hominey Swamp, 1760
5. William Nichols near Coneto Creek, 1761
Arthur Hedgepeth is not shown on the map but the deed
which I mentioned in my previous post says that he
purchased land located on the Great Swamp, 17 Aug 1754,
from Thomas Sanders and that Isaac Nickols was a witness
to the deed.

There is mention of a book by Doris R. Nichol in the Library
of Virginia, online, which is in reference to the William Nichols family of
Nansemond County, VA, and their migration thru the southeastern
United States and mentions specifically Jeremiah Nichols of
Edgecombe County.

I didn't mean to go on so about the Nichols families,
but I wanted to mention them in reference to Nansemond
County because I noticed so many references in the posts to
the mailing lists about Hedgepeths also living in Nansemond
County. I thought some of these names and places might help
in some way.

 Jimmie & all,

I read your post with great interest. Samuel Godwin of Johnston County, NC
had ties to Edgecombe Co., NC - where he was the administrator of William
Godwin's estate. Samuel Sr's will listed sons Simon, Jesse, Arnold, Samuel
Jr, & Jordan. Also named in his will are daughters Mary Morris, Kezia Pew,
& grandson Jesse Hedgepeth (apparently, the son of Samuel Godwin's deceased
 daughter).

The only Nichols that I know who are connected to this family is Coleman
Nichols who married Martha Pearce Godwin (widow of Solomon Godwin).

I know this will not help you much, but I bet these folks are related to your
 line as well.

 Thanks,
 Lori Godwin
