George Beard came to Australia as an assisted immigrant onboard the 'Constitution' which arrived in Manly, New South Wales on the 27 May 1855. An outbreak of smallpox occurred onboard the ship, 14 died and the ship was quarantined. Commemoration of the 150th year since the ships landing took place at at the North Head Quarantine Station, Manly, NSW on 17 July 2005, and was attended by a lot of descendents of those immigrants.

Also on the ship were Amos & Peter Beard, sons of Robert Beard & Mary Criswell from Longstow, Cambridgeshire. These Beard's may be distant cousins of the ones in Essex.

After arriving in Manly, George left for the goldfields of New Zealand. He found enough gold to later have made into a brooch for his wife. It is believed that he was nearly swept away by a flash flood while sleeping in what had been a dry river bed. He left New Zealand on the "Versailles" in 1862 to come to Port Philip, and then stayed with his sister Mary in Geelong. In 1873 he married Ann Collyer at Colac. They moved to Dooboobetic. Later they moved to land at Mount Hoogley near Dunolly in Victoria. In later years George was a Baker at Vermont on the outskirts of Melbourne. George & Ann were buried in the Box-Hill Cemetery.

George named his 2nd son George Innes Beard, and his 3rd son Richard Clemens Beard. Clemens was the surname of Ann Collyer's mother, the name Innes does not appear anywhere in Ann's ancestry, so it is possible that Innes surname name crops up somewhere further back in the Beard or Chaplin families.

George's son George Innes invested a lot of time and money into the families farm, only to lose out, as on his fathers death bed, his sister Ada influenced her fathers decision to have his will changed.

George Beard's will as of 24 November 1911:

This is the last will and testament of me George Beard. I give devise and bequeath unto George Innes Beard, Mary Ann Walker, Richard Clemens Beard, Charles William Beard and Victor Alexander Beard each 1 of my life insurance.

George served in the Victorian Rangers for 9 years before WW1, on his military record it lists his trade as Engine Driver.

About 1919 the family moved to the Port George IV mission which was also known as the 'Kunmunya mission', it lies between Derby & Wyndham in the West Kimberley region. George took up a job as a missionary & protector of Aborigines , Mary was a nurse.

They were well respected by the local Worora aborigines, who had given Lynda the name "Werraurulla" which meant "kangaroo's knee", Jean was named 'Boorawulla' which meant "kangaroo's thigh", as children the names obviously related to their height. Bobby Love, the son of the local presbyterian minister was known as "Kometi Korruk Pooma" which meant "little boy who picks his nose".

The Beard family later moved back to Maryborough, Victoria, and then on to New South Wales. Years later the aboriginals from the mission offered to pay the airfare for Mary Eliza Beard to fly to Broome so they could see her again, but sadly she was well up in years, and didn't feel that she could handle the trip.
