Azel Batten

Azel Batten is listed in the 1860 Census for Johnston County, North Carolina.  His record shows that he was a farmer and was born in North Carolina.  His wife was listed as Catherine age 25.  His children were listed as Martha age 9, Patience age 6, Sylvester age 5, and Perry age 2.  In 1860, Azel was 30 years old, which puts his approximate birth date at around 1830.

No further census records have been found on Azel yet.  However, it is believed that he and his family moved to Wayne County sometime after the 1860 Census and just prior to the start of the Civil War.

Official documentation records that an A.A. Batten was attached to Company I, 15th Regiment of North Carolina.  When he enlisted in Wake County on July 15, 1862, he was 34 years old and a resident of Wayne County.  He was present and accounted for until he was wounded in the knee and breast and captured during the Battle of South Mountain at Crampton's Pass, Maryland on September 14, 1862.  He was probably hospitalized at one of the two churches in Burkittsville, Maryland that were converted to hospitals to treat both the Union and Confederate troops.  President Abraham Lincoln passed through this town in October of the same year while returning to Washington D.C. from a visit to McClellan's army at Antietam.  Azel Batten died from his wounds on November 3, 1862.

Azel Batten was the great, great, grandfather of Charlie Wood (webmaster for this site).
