Jefferson Davis Monument, State Historic Site:

Jefferson Davis was elected President of the Confederate States of America on February 18, 1861, less than a month before Abraham Lincoln was inaugurated President of the Union, and two months before the outbreak of the Civil War on April 12, 1861.  Ironically, these two destined adversaries were born in Kentucky in log cabins within one year and 100 miles apart.  A 351-foot obelisk marks the birthplace of Jefferson Davis, born on June 3, 1808.  The monument features an elevator that carries visitors to the top of the structure for a panoramic view of the countryside.  The site is 10 miles east of Hopkinsville on US 68.
