When he was 30 years old, he enlisted in the Confederate Army on January 23, 1862 with Company K, 33rd Regiment of North Carolina. He was reported absent without leave on November 1, 1862, and he returned to duty prior to March 1, 1863. William was captured at or near The Battle of Chancellorsville, Virginia on May 3, 1963 and sent to Washington D.C. On September 23, 1863, he was once again paroled and transferred to City Point, Virginia as part of a prisoner exchange. William was reported absent wounded through February 1865.

On an application for a Confederate pension dated July 6, 1885, William Mooring stated he was 60 years old and a resident of Snow Hill and was wounded at the Battle of Gettysburg. R.A. Edwards of Snow Hill vouched for him on his application.

Based on research done so far, it is believed that John Mooring and William R. Mooring were brothers and that William was the great, grandfather of Rose Mary Mooring Wood (wife of Charlie Wood).
