Malchus Talton was born about 1825. The 1860 Census listed him as being 35 years old and a farmer in Wayne County, North Carolina. His family at the time was Piety his wife, who was 35 years old, and children Sally Ann aged 16, William Henry aged 14, Rhoda aged 12, Cullen G. aged 10, Ervin G. aged 9, and Matilda aged 2. His mother Zelphia, aged 65, was also listed.

Malchus may have moved to Johnston County prior to the Civil War. On May 27, 1861, he enlisted in Wayne County. He was in Company H, 2nd Regiment of North Carolina.  Malchus was wounded on July 1, 1863 in The Battle of Gettysburg.

He was reported as absent wounded until he was assigned to guard duty at a hospital in Goldsboro, North Carolina on March 26, 1864. On April 5, 1864 he was discharged from the hospital and returned to regular duty. He was wounded again and admitted to a hospital in Farmville, Virginia on May 6, 1864. He was transferred to a hospital in Richmond, Virginia on May 21, 1864. While in this hospital, he was assigned to guard duty on July 1, 1864. Malchus received a furlough from this hospital on January 23, 1865. He was captured at Camp Winder, a large hospital complex, in Richmond, Virginia on April 3, 1865 and was paroled on April 20, 1865.

After the Civil War, Malchus lived in Johnston County, North Carolina, and from additonal records it appears that he may have remarried and had additional children. Malchus was the great, great, great, grandfather of Rose Mary Mooring Wood (wife of Charlie Wood, webmaster for this website).
