A2-Line Dr. Hans Heinrich Neff

By John F. Murray, Updated July 8, 1004

[email protected]

Generation 1

.

.A2 Hans Heinrich NEFF was born about 1682 probably in Dühren, Germany. Hans Heinrich died April 1745 in Lancaster Co., PA, Lancaster Twp. He married (1) ____ about 1704 in the area of Dühren or Bonfeld Germany. There are 5 known children of Hans Heinrich NEFF and ____ (see Generation 2). Before 1739 he married (2) Franca _____ who was the stepmother of his 4 surviving children in 1745. She was probably the widow of Heinrich Funk who died in 1735.

This Neff family immigrated from Bonfeld, Germany in 1717 with his brother and family. Bonfeld is a town about 10 miles east of Dühren. They left Bonfeld on 23 May 1717 with the families of Heinrich Funk and his son Martin Funk. They were listed as Anabaptist. This Bonfeld Church record does not give the first names of the Neff brothers. But the Pennsylvania records of 1717 and 1718 show that the Neffs associated with these Funk families were Hans Heinrich A2-Line and Jacob Neff D-Line. Heinrich Funk and Hans Heinrich Neff settled next to each other on the Conestoga River in Lancaster, Twp. Jacob Neff D-Line and Martin Funk (son of Heinrich Funk) settled in Coventry Twp. Chester Co. PA. (See the D-Line) These Neff and Funk families must have been closely related because the children did not intermarry. We do know that the great grandparents of Heinrich Funk were Jacob Funk married to Anna Neff from Ober Mettmenstetten in the Knonau District of Canton Zurich, Switzerland. But this marriage would not have prevented intermarriage of these Neff and Funk families in PA.

Recent research has proven that Dr. Francis Neff and family came in 1719 and was not one of the Neff brothers that immigrated from Bonfeld in 1717. See A1 Dr. Francis Neff concerning his relationship to Dr. Hans Heinrich Neff A2 and see the D-Line for more on Jacob Neff’s family.

Generation 2

.A21 Hans Heinrich NEFF was born 1705 in Dühren or Bonfeld, Germany, died 8 June 1784 in Shenandoah Co., VA, and was buried in at New Market in the Kegey-Neff Cem. His will probate 29 Jul 1784. He married Ann _____ in Lancaster Co., PA. She was born about 1714. Ann died 14 April 1796 in Shenandoah Co., VA. Date of death is from tombstone in the Neff\Keagy Cemetery which reads, 1796, April 14 "AN." She is buried next to John Henry. There are 7 known children of Hans Heinrich and Ann Neff. (See the next generation with numbers beginning with A21).

.

.A22 Johannes Jacob NEFF was born 1709 in Dühren or Bonfeld, Germany. Johannes died 1 February 1717 in Bonfeld, Germany. This death record was recorded in the back of the Bonfeld church records.

.A23 Catherine NEFF was born 15 May 1711 in Bonfeld, Germany. Catherine died 2 March 1789 in Warrick Twp., Lancaster Co., PA, and was buried in Middle Creek Cemetery. She married Michael PFOUTZ. He was born 21 May 1709 in Germany. He was the son of Johan Michael PFOUTZ and Ursula MUELENHAUSER. Michael died 21 March 1767 in Lancaster Co., PA, and was buried in Middle Creek Cemetery. There are 4 known children of Catherine NEFF and Michael PFOUTZ. (See the next generation with numbers beginning with A23).

.A24 Abraham NEFF was born about 1719 in Lancaster Co., PA. Abraham died about 1793 in Lancaster, PA. He married Mary HERSHEY the daughter of Christian HERSHEY . She was born 1721 in Lancaster Co., PA and died about 1799. There are 4 known children: Christian m. Magdalena/Martha ___; Esther married (1) Adam Breneman, married (2) Christian Corral; Maria married John Breneman; and Elizabeth married George Gundecker. I list these here because I did not list Elizabeth in 1991. These names come from an unrecorded Lancaster Co. Deed issued in the settlement of Abraham’s estate. (See the next generation with numbers beginning with A24).

.A25 a daughter Lancaster deed B301 says Abraham (A24) had 2 sisters and an older brother Henry. The second daughter of Dr. Hans Henry Neff A1 has not yet been identified and she might be older or younger that Abraham.

In my 1991 list following "the Eby Report" I placed here Barbara, the wife of George Eby of Warrick Twp. But we now know that Barbara was not a Neff. I believe she was a Miley a sister of Christian Miley, the guardian of her children after her husband George Eby died. The Hans Herr Book says that Esther Neff who married Hans Herr was a daughter of Dr. Hans Heinrich, which is probably incorrect. Everything known about Esther would indicate that she was A15 the daughter of Dr. Francis Neff. See the A15 Esther Neff for more on Esther. It is of interest to note that in the 1700s the name Esther Neff occurs only in the A1, A2 and D Lines of Neffs. Francis A1 had two granddaughters named Esther (A161, and A176). Hans Heinrich A2 had 1 granddaughter (A252) and 1 great granddaughter (A2118) named Esther. Jacob D-Line had one daughter (D4) and 2 granddaughters (D14 and D56) named Esther. In the A and D families similar statistics occur with the name Margaret and Francis. Every Neff line has unique names that help identify their ancestral connections.

Another possibility for a second daughter is Anna/Nancy Naf who married in Lancaster on February 13, 1743 to Hans Peter Seitz of Strasburg Twp. But I question this because they lived in Strasburg Twp among the children of A1 and she can easily fit into that family. Noting the spellings on the marriage record causes me to believe that Ann Naf was the daughter of Jacob and Elizabeth (Kuhn) Naf and a sister to Elizabeth Naf who married June 24, 1744 to Felix Leinbacher. Ann and Elizabeth were orphaned in 1735 when their parents died at sea coming to Philadelphia on the Ship Mercury. So we are still missing one daughter of Dr. Hans Heinrich Neff A2.
