Richard Leigh

Generation No. 1

1. RICHARD1 LEIGH (RICHARDA) was born 11 May 1836 in Tn, and died 06 Jan 1894 in Christian Co., Mo. He married MARY ELISABETH GREEN 03 Mar 1859 in Carroll Co. Tennessee1, daughter of UNKNOWN HUMPHREY and ELIZABETH.

Richard and Mary Leigh were listed in the 1860 census of Carroll Co., TN in District 8 house #934. Living in the next house (#933) was the family of Emeline Leigh age 33, Adaline 31 , Eliz J. 27, Nancy C. 23, Lucy 20, James D 18, Wm D 16, Lucinda 13, and Sarah 11. All fit the 1850 Tippah MS census. Missing are Hildra age 29 and Martha age 27.

Richard and Mary probably moved to Illinois shortly before the outbreak of the Civil War. When I posed the question: Was there a specific reason a family would move from TN to Perry Co ., IL I got this response from Peggy Holley who does a lot of work for the Carroll Co., TN Gene Society and is a history teacher.

"The number of people who left Carroll County and other mid-west Tennessee counties before and during the Civil War is tremendous. The scenario seems to have been that some good farmland opened up in southern Illinois in the area often referred to as Little Egypt sometime around the 1850s. A few families moved to that area. Little Egypt is the southern tip of Illinois. Cairo is the most obvious indication but some of the smaller towns are named Thebes, Karnak, etc. There is also a Lake of Egypt and even Perry Co has a Pyramid State Park. It was a very fertile area, apparently, with a large river which reminded a historically and Biblically trained generation of Egypt.

When the Civil War was looming southern Unionists went north or sent their sons north to stay with relatives to avoid the Confederate draft. (Four counties in mid-west Tennessee including Carroll voted not to join the Confederacy.) As the war progressed more and more people left the area for Illinois. If your relative did not serve is not unusual because as southerners some did not wish to fight against their neighbors. Some did, however, and two Union regiments were raised in the mid-west Tennessee area among the Unionists there.

The church to which several Leigh's and Humphrey's may have belonged to was the Christian Chapel Church of Christ. The Christian's Chapel Church was, however, not pacifist during the Civil War. The minister, John Neely, became Captain of a company which contained many members of that church, including Richard's brother William D. (Co M 6th Tenn Cav USA) who died during the war on 8 March 1864 and is buried in Memphis. Another Leigh sister, Sarah, married Isaiah Morris who was also in the Union Army tho not in the preacher's company. He was in Co. M 12th TN Cav.

It is also interesting to note that the Methodist Minister who married Richard and Mary, Jesse Giles was also a Justice of the Peace as well as a minister. He was the tax collector for Carroll Co. and was so much of a Unionist that he collected the taxes for the county just before Tennessee went Confederate and refused to turn the money over to the CSA government. After the war was over he took it to the reconstruction government."

By 1863, Richard and Mary were living in IL when their daughter Sarah was born. They were in Illinois from 1863 until 1874 and then moved to Christian Co., MO. The family is listed in the 1870 census of Perry Co., IL. The family is listed in the 1880 census of that county with four children born in IL and the last one born in MO.

In 1887 Richard Leigh applied for a homestead in Christian County, Section 5 N., Range 25 W . and in 1893 received title to 127 acres. The character of the land was described as "timber and farming land" with 40 to 50 acres in cultivation, a log house 16 x 20 feet, a barn and an orchard, all worth $500.

Family tradition says that Richard Leigh served in the Civil War, but so far, there is no record of this. I did send to the National Archives requesting a copy of Civil War Pension and Military records, but no such file was found.

I did send for the military records of Richard's brother, William.

Notes for MARY ELISABETH GREEN:

"Mary's parents are unknown and, according to family stories, they died of yellow fever by 18 50. By 1850, she is being raised by 'a near relative', Elisabeth Humphrey. Mary Green is listed in the 1850 census of Carroll Co., TN in the family of Elisabeth Humphrey, a widow, age 60, with several children of her own. Mary was 11 years old. She had an only brother, Joseph M. Green and a grandmother whose last name was Bly or Blythe. This grandmother suposedly left Mary an estate in TN which was never collected by Mary or her family and was probably lost to taxes or by some other means." [Mildred Ambler, 1998]

In 1925, William Leigh, Mary's son, wrote a letter to Goodman and Goodman, attorneys in Minneapolis, MN regarding the estate left to his mother from her grandmother.

It reads Dear Sir:

In regards to the letter I received the other day in regards to that estate my mother left in Tennessee. Her own father was married some few years before the War broke out in '61. They went from TN to IL and stayed until I was about 3 years old and then came to Missouri where they stayed til death. My mother's name was Mary Lizzie Beth Green before she married but this estate is coming from her grandmother whose name was Bly. She had only one brother. His name was Josef M Green. My father told me several times about the estate. He said we would get that some day when we needed it worse. My mother was born Dec 25, 1839 and died June 19 , 1913 at Ozark, Christian Co., MO. If any more information that I can do, I will be pleased to do so. My Post office is Highlandville, MO Box 38.

Yours Truly, W D Leigh
