BURGH CASTLE NEWARKs

Burg Castle Root

• Henry Newark 1760 - 1826  A relatively wealthy, twice married, property owner.

“Thacker” Newark Branch

• James Newark 1837-1918  Pioneering emigrant
• Dr. Wallace E. Newark 1861-1923  Founder of the Charlotte Sanitarium
• William Newark 1846-1932 and his wife Esther Jane  He was a labourer and roadsweeper, she was a mid-wife. This couple had a very large family, and lost many of their sons in tragic circumstances.

“Newington” Newark Branch

• Charles W. Newark 1862-1917 Blindmaker
• Ernest Walter Newark, B.E.M, 1896-1963  Chief Inspector, Metropolitan London Police. It is interesting to compare Ernest’s career with that of James William Newark (below).  Their lives were similar in several respects.  Both were decorated for bravery helping their fellow man during the second world war, both worked in potentially dangerous services on behalf of their country, and both were involved in the Atomic Energy program of the 1950-60’s.

• James William Newark, 1904-1981  Boxing champion, explosives expert, hero

“Branston” Newark Branch

• Arthur Newark, 1895 -  Manager of Singapore Airport in 1939 and chief instructor at the Kuala Lumpur Flying Club.

Lincolnshire Newark families

• George (1790-1866) and Mary Newark.  Emigrants from Lincolnshire to New York State, USA circa 1840 (PDF file)

Medieval Newark families

• William Newark (1450 -1509).  Composer, Master of the Children of the Chapel Royal.
• Thomas Newerck (Newarke).  A 17^th century Newark of Gorleston, Suffolk.

West Midland Newark families

• Professor Francis Headon Newark, C.B.E., LL.D., B.C.L., M.A. (Oxon). 1907-1976  Barrister at Law
• George Newark  A potter from Staffordshire who enlisted as a soldier in the Life Guards .  He and his wife each died young in seperate tragic and unusual circumstances.

 Unknown  families

• John Wright Newark   An infamous individual known to us only through the Proceedings of the Old Bailey.   His middle name should have been “Wrong” not “Wright”.
• Algernon Newark   A turn of the 20^th century repertory actor.
• Timothy Newark. A poor US farmer whose family name was terminated by the deaths of two of his sons in the US civil war and by the death of his third son in the Lenawee County Poorhouse, Michigan.

Charles Newrick

·          Charles Newrick (1793-1841)  A Medical Curiosity.  We know of him today due to his death from a constricted trachea and the scientific paper that was written about it.

“Saginaw”  Newrick Branch

·          Henry and Thomas Newrick  Emigrants from Suffolk to Michigan, USA circa 1855.  Thomas William Newark was a grocer in Saginaw, Michigan while his older brother Henry Valentine Newrick served in the Union forces during the Civil War and later moved to the turbulent frontier town of Fort Scott, Kansas.
