Probable Transcription Errors or Variations

Below is a list of errors that I noted as I looked through the surname lists. There are several different reasons for these errors, however, most appear to have been caused by inaccurate transcribing of the manifest records. I think if you look at the scans of the original manifests, you will agree that deciphering many of them is a very difficult task. In addition, a number of surnames were spelled "differently" at the time the original ship manifests were submitted at Ellis Island. I did not correct the spellings of all surnames, since many of them are only minor variations or, for years, they may have been an acceptable spelling variation of a certain Newfoundland surname. In addition to those listed below, there were a number of possible spelling errors that I could not verify due to problems with the links to the scanned original manifest.

20 Glaney,Sam Ghaney,Sam Manifest This name appears a number of times (maybe two individuals) with several different spellings. This Conception Harbour area surname is usually spelled as Ghaney or Gahney but there are several other spellings in the manifests.
