Alexander Nicol (1881-1972)

Born 1881 Rosemarkie - died Drumheller, Alberta, Canada 1972
Great Great Grandson of David Nicol & Janet Bremner.

Two of John Nicol (1833-1913) and Christian Cameron's eight children, Charles Nicol (b 1873) and Alexander Nicol (b 1881) emmigrated to Canada circa 1908. Charles Nicol was born in Rosemarkie Ross & Cromarty, Scotland in October 1873, did not marry, and died in Vanderhoof, British Columbia in March 1960.

When searching the sailings from Glasgow to Quebec Canada, we note these two listings that could be our family...

An Alexander Nicol sailed on The Athena on 29 July 1910, unmarried and aged 27 years. A Charles Nicol aged 30 sailed on the Hisperian on 03 September 1909.

Alexander Nicol is found on the 1901 census of Rosemarkie living with his parents John & Christina, listed as a gardener. After migrating to Canada, he was at some time a carpenter and also a coal miner.

There is a possible listing for Alex on the 1911 census of Alberta, Canada - Alexander Nicol, Enumeration District 27: Coleman, MacLeod. On May of 1916, he joined the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force to serve in World War I. It is known from Alex's family that he lived for 62 years in Drumheller and the Verdant Valley area.

He married Isabelle Angus in Alberta, Canada. They had three children: John Alexander Cameron Nicol who died in infancy, Christina born in 1920 and Jean. At his death he was survived by his daughter Christina (Nicol) Holub, 10 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. He is interred in the Drumheller Cemetery

From his obituary, Alex was a World War I veteran, prominent in Masonic Circles in the Valley and, like many of his Scottish kin folk, he was a fiddler. His family has a fiddle that he made himself.
