John Nicol (1833-1913) Born 27 April 1833 Avoch.
|
The above John was the son of Thomas Nicol, tenant of Auchterflow, Avoch Ross & Cromarty and Christian Urquhart of Kinkell Ross & Cromarty. Thomas, born in September 1799, had parents John Nicol, born circa 1770, in Resolis and, at time of his marriage to Ann Bain, of Redcastle in August 1791, was also a farmer of Auchterflow. In turn, John was the son of David Nicol & Janet Bremner. John, born Avoch 1833, first married Margaret MacDonald in 1856 & had children Donald & Isabella. His wife, Margaret, died of Typhoid in 1861. He and his second wife Christina Cameron were married 26 November 1868, in the Roman Catholic Church, Inverness. Christina Cameron was born c 1844 in Kilmonivaig, Invernesshire, Scotland. John Nicol and Christina Cameron had seven children: Hannah, Thomas, Charles, Christina, Donald, Marjorie, John & Alexander. Thomas migrated to Australia in 1899, and Alexander and Charles to Canada shortly after, circa 1908. Charles settled in British Columbia. Alexander married in Alberta, Canada & had two daughters Jean & Christina. It must have been heart breaking for John & Christina to have said "Good-bye" to three of their children knowing that they would never see them again. Donald became a chauffeur to the doctor in Fortrose, Marjorie trained as a nurse in Edinburgh, and Isabella married William Junor who worked on the railways and lived in Dunkeld. Hannah Margaret married Joseph McLennan of Fortrose on 03 April 1903. They had no children.
