19 CUMBERLAND HEIGHTS
February 18,1896--The injunction to replenish the earth has been faithfully followed by John Martin, colored, of District 13 of this county. To a Leaf-Chronicle reporter today he gave a few bits of the history of himself and family, that is in a �fatherly� way.
Martin, who for years has driven his ox team to and from the city, is fifty-four. He has been married four times, but there were three children only born of the first three unions. In the stirring times of February 1865, he married his present wife, and to them have been born 21 children-15 boys and 6 girls thus making Martin the father of 24 children, 9 girls and 15 boys, while his present wife, who is 46, is the mother of twenty-one children within 31 years time, as last night she presented the dusky Benjamin with another girl. As far as heard from Martin and wife, and Martin especially, hold the record for prolificness in this county, or for that matter in this entire section. Martin and family should be placed on exhibit at the Tennessee Centennial. The baby was named Laveta Haidee Martin.

August 9,1889--Will Young, our clever Franklin Street grocer, was so excessively elated yesterday when he discovered that it was a girl that he hurried down to tell the boys. Partner Lee Pickering says the first thing he did was to stumble over a box of eggs, and in addition to wrecking them, lost his equilibrium and fell over into a pile of fine watermelons, smashing them likewise.
