Duncan Heights Cemetery
a/k/a Lakeview Cemetery
Duncan Road, McCandless Twp., PA

Lattitude: 40°33'57.52"N / Longitude: 80° 0'3.04"W

The original history and records of this flood-prone cemetery have been long-lost over time. Prior efforts to restore the cemetery were foiled by a deed that could not be cleared. Its primary owner died in 1961 -- the last year of any known burials -- and other shareholders vanished with all records. Research has determined that this property was supposedly owned by a small colored church around 1931, which they later abandoned. The 6 acre cemetery then became known as a pauper's cemetery, and the last burial was in the mid 1960s.  In September 1961, the American Legion (32nd District) tried in vain to acquire assistance from then County Commissioners and the Office of Veterans Affairs. The Legion filed a letter of concern stating "that a deplorable and disrespectful condition existed with regard to the care granted the graves of war veterans".  But, without proof of ownership, nothing could legally be done. The condition of the cemetery remained unkept for many years afterward.

In June, 2007 an organizational meeting of interested parties of this cemetery, took place in the McCandless Township Municipal Building.  A result of the meeting led to the formation of the "Duncan Heights Cemetery Association", whose plan was to take over ownership of the property that the township now concedes is long abandoned.  However, in late September, 2007 the Association issued the following statement:

"After considering all of the options to restoring the cemetery at last night's Board meeting, and realistically considering our ability to raise the necessary funds ($120K minimum) as well as the sustainability of the group to meet the challenges to obtaining title/501(c)3, the Board voted unanimously to disband the group. We will be returning all donations to the donors . . . "

(Directions: McKnight Road North from Pittsburgh - pass Northway Mall on left and McIntyre Square on right.  Approx. 1/2 mile, make a right at the traffic light at Duncan Rd..  Proceed past next 2 traffic lights.  Allegheny Memorial Park Cemetery is on your right and Duncan Heights is on the left - BEFORE the next traffic light.)

Estimated burials here range from 400 to possibly 2,000. Without official documentation there is no way to tell at this time.  Some existing military markers appear to have been moved from their original locations, either through vandalism or forces of nature, and some may have been removed completely. The listing below was compiled from an earlier (1991) reading (marked by asterisks) and current visible markers in 2007. As new discoveries are made they will be added to the list.
