DUGAN'S CEMETERY - Allegheny County, Pennsylvania

Names and Inscriptions Copied by Miss Calla L. STAHLMANN, June 2, 1948.
Recopied by Phyllis Murphy GUMBERT, March 1970.

REGISTER of DUGAN'S CEMETERY, ALLEGHENY COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA

Located off Route 366, about 4.4. miles from Camp Jo Ann, the junction of routes 380 and 366, towards New Kensington on the left hand side of Route 366. Only Pucketos (or Puckety) Creek separates Allegheny County from Westmoreland County at this spot.

There never was a church in connection with this cemetery. It was and still is used by the United Presbyterian and Presbyterian Churches of Parnassus, now included in the New Kensington Borough.

UPPER AND LOWER BURRELL TOWNSHIPS
Lower and Upper Burrell Townships were erected in 1879, by the division of Burrell. The original township was taken from Allegheny township, and organized in 1852. It was named in honor of Judge J. Murry Burrell, who was president judge of the court when it was erected.

The boundaries were north by Allegheny, east by Washington, southeast by Franklin townships, west by Allegheny River, the Big and Little Pucketos, the Allegheny and other small streams watered it. The chief occupation of the people, is agriculture.

PIONEER SETTLERS
Of the early settlers nearly all are of Scotch-Irish extraction. The Crooks family located on Pucketos Creek in  1791, and came from Antietam Creek. William Ross was born in Ireland and, on his arrival in this country, first located in Franklin and then Adams County, and removed to the glades
in 1794; John Ross followed in 1801, who died in June 23, 1827, aged fifty four.

The former died Aug. 28, 1849, aged 87 years. His wife was a Miss Esther Reid, of Greencastle, to whom he was married April 19, 18903. John Stewart settled in 1804, with his brother William, who died April 19, 1850, aged 68 years. John Bales settled in 1805.

Among other early settlers were the McLaughlins, Birelys,  Millers, Hummels (of Whom David died May 23, 1867, aged 69. Donnells, the Hunters, Skillens, Moores, Logans, Shearers, Leslies, Bessorts, Blacks, Georges, Swanks, Milligans, Sands, Woolslayers, Rowans, Nelsons, Gills, Dugans, Henrys, Keisers, Lanes, Ingrams, Crawfords, Caldwells, Menks, Younkins, Fredericks, Kunkles, Loves, McWilliams, McCutcheons and Ashbaughs.

One of the first pioneers was James Johnston*, a Revolutionary soldier, who lived to be one hundred and three years old**, and is buried in DUGAN'S graveyard in Allegheny County.

DAVID ALTER came to Pucketos Creek from Cumberland County. His father was born in Switzerland and emigrated to America before the Revolution. He married Elizabeth Mills, and his sister married Gov. Ritner.

Of David's twelve children, the eldest daughter became the wife of Major George Dugan (probably Nancy); and his eldest son, Joseph was the father of Dr. David Alter. David Alter was born in 1775, and was a captain in the war of 1812, and built the noted "Alter's Mills" on Pucketos. His son Joseph married Margaret C. Dinsmore, of an early family.

During the period from 1791 to 1795 the settlers were subjected to many invasions by predatory bands of Indians, who carried off many into captivity, murdered and scalped others, and burned their cabins and plundered them of their stock.

(*) The name should be "John" instead of "James").
(**) He was 100 years, 1 or 11 mos. 1 da., according to his tombstone, which is still quite legible.
(Above sketch from Albert's "History of Westmoreland County, Pa." - pages 710-711; published 1882.

From: History of Old Allegheny Twp, Dr. Reid Stewart, pg 25:
"John Johnston of Allegheny Township died March 12, 1843, in his 103rd year.  He had served from the beginning to the end of the Revolution with General Anthony Wayne and participated in the battles of White Plains, Trenton, Princeton, Brandywine, Germantown, Monmouth, Stony Point, Guilford Courthouse and Yorktown.  At Stony Point he was one of the gallant "Forlorn Hope."  His body was escorted to Dugan Cemetery by militia under Major G.W. Markle and Captain Kipp.  The largest concourse of people ever assembled in the neighborhood gathered for the interment.  Johnston had received a state pension in 1825.  The writer visited Dugan Cemetery many years ago and assembled the sloughed off pieces of Johnston's tombstone and was able to read his name and age which the stonecutter had cut as "1003."  The stone is now effaced to such an extent that it is no longer recognizable as Johnston's burial place.  Johnston was listed in 1840 as a Revolutionary pensioner from Allegheny Township, Westmoreland Co, PA aged 93 (which age was incorrect)." -- (CD)

If you are coming from New Kensington on Route 366, turn right at about 2 ½ miles (at the bridge) onto Albee Drive. Continue on Albee Drive through the intersection at Newgate Drive and continue half way up the hill, then turn right onto a non-blacktop road (Cemetery Road –no road-sign). This road leads directly to the Dugan Cemetery entrance.
