In the center of A Ring is a
memorial to Civil War Veterans.
The monument is an armed soldier on a
lit pedestal with canons and cannonballs. The monument states:
“A.D. 1891, Erected to the
memory of the country’s defenders by General Griffin Post Number 207 G.
A. R. Gen Griffin Circle of number 41,
Ladies of the G/A/ R. , J.S.
Hollingshead, Camp number 8. Sons of veterans and the citizens of
Homestead and vicinity.”
Each side of the monument
commemorates a Union victory, those battles being: Gettysburg,
Appomattox, and Vicksburg.
The monument is surrounded by a circle
of 41 graves of war veterans. Many are too weathered to read.
Three of the forty-one tombstones are
missing but are marked by Memorial Day Flags.
