From the contributor:
This is the actual headstone listing for this cemetery, there is a separate link that has cemetery records (linked above).  I typed these exactly as they were carved on the stone, or when the stone was illegible used the cemetery records to fill in the blanks.  There are variations in spelling from some of the stones compared to the cemetery records, so if you are looking for a certain name be sure to check both lists.

There are many babies and others buried here that do not have a stone marking their resting place, so the cemetery record list has more names than these headstone records show and can be helpful to the genealogist.  The cemetery records are also very interesting as they have the cause of death listed.  I noticed that a family of 4 had ‘murder’ listed as their cause of death and after researching it found that one of the sons killed his mother, 2 sisters and then himself.  The sad newspaper story is at this link:
http://news.google.com/newspapers?id=OyEbAAAAIBAJ&sjid=20sEAAAAIBAJ&pg=4056,4021438&dq=gregor+family+murders&hl=en

Another fascinating story is the one of Mary (Marie) Maksovitz.  Her headstone does not have her surname, it reads: “Marie, died 8-15-1911, in 20th year, Buried 3-6-1925.”  A headstone like that has to have a story!  I found the following explanation on USGenWeb Archives: (Note the different death dates.)
Mary (Marie) Maksovitz, age 20, died of Pulmonary Tuberculosis at Woodville Hospital on November 11, 1911. Marie was a pauper with no family to arrange a burial. Local funeral director, George C. Hackius, of Carnegie offered his services as a charity case. With no one to object he tried an experimental method to embalm the body. The result was the body became known as "the mummy" that Mr. Hackius exhibited in a glass case in the entrance of the funeral home. He also took Marie to various conventions of morticians around the country to exhibit his "skills". In 1925 a fire destroyed the funeral home and badly damaged the mummy. St. John Lutheran Church donated a burial site and Marie was finally laid to rest. (information contributed by Sam Balisteri)
I could not verify this story, but if true, it’s sad that the poor girl was so mistreated and strange that her headstone doesn’t even have her surname. I did find a news story about the funeral home burning down but the article didn’t mention Marie at all.

There is also an Iraqi war veteran buried here.  Staff Sgt. Joseph Goodrich died in Iraq on July 10, 2005.   His headstone was surrounded by dozens of American flags and US Marine Corps memorabilia.  There is another grave that doesn’t have a marker, just a wooden cross, but has a flag that reads, “Purple Heart Recipient” and another with “MIA.”

I also found a dozen of my fellow Chartiers Valley High School students, many that I knew personally, and didn’t know had passed away.  For a small cemetery it has a very interesting history.
