A surprise to me! Grandpa in Knights of
Malta regalia? As I understand it, the K of M is a Roman
Catholic group. Grandpa was baptized evangelical (in GER) and
raised Lutheran in the US and married a Lutheran; and had all of
his children baptized Lutheran. Then again, Grandpa's father,
Herman Clemens/t Fischer (1845-1931) and all HCF's ancestors
were RC. Did this have something to do with Grandpa Fischer
joining this group? SEE also McQuaid1781.]

SEE also McQuaid1780. I've just explored the
international "Order of Malta" website, and found this page,
which talks about groups which imitate the real thing:

So is that a possibility? Looks pretty real to me. Wish I could
find out!]
Herrman Wilhelm FISCHER
(known in the USA as William Herman) was born 26 Jul 1873 in
Massiefen, Kr. Solingen, Rheinland, Pruessen, Deutschland. He,
his mother Augustina (GERHARDS) Fischer, and siblings August,
Hugo, and Catharine immigrated on 7 May 1891 into Philadelphia
onboard the SS Switzerland, to join father/husband Herman
Clemens Fischer in the Stanton Heights area of Allegheny County.
Wm H married Anna Marie BAUER at St. Peter’s
E & R Lutheran Church in the East End area of Pittsburgh on
25 Jul 1895, and was naturalized in the Federal court of Western
PA (in Pgh) on 6 Sep 1896. In their first 12 years of marriage
while Wm H. was a landscape gardener and yard man in the East
End, Annie birthed 3 daughters and 4 sons. Elsie and Mayme were
identical twin daughters (1896-1987 and 1896-1975), followed by
Herman (1897-1986), Lillian (1900-1989), Bill (1903-1979), Dick
(1905-1964), and George (1907-1977).
In 1908, W. H. was hired as Sexton/caretaker
of Tree of Life (Jewish) Cemetery on Kittanning Pike, O’Hara
Twp. He and/or his sons continued in this position until 1967.
William and Annie lived in the caretaker’s house on the cemetery
grounds and Annie bore their last 4 children: Anna (1910-2009),
Raymond (1912-1912), Esther (1915-2009), and Bob (1919-2005).
In 1924, the Fischers built a greenhouse
complex beside the Kittanning Pike entrance of Greenwood
Cemetery, and began the Wm H Fischer & Sons Landscape
Gardeners: Flowers [and] Nursery. The core Fischer family moved
to their new “homestead” beside the greenhouses; while a
progression of the children with their own young families moved
in and out of the Cemetery house as my uncles took over the
Sexton duties. The Nursery/Landscape/Flower business would
operate until 1976 when the heat was finally turned off in the
greenhouses
William H Fischer was known to have been both
a member and Fire Chief of the Pleasant Valley (O’Hara Twp)
Volunteer Fire Department, a member of the Allegheny (Co.)
Fireman’s Association, and an honorary member of the local
Veterans of Foreign Wars. His son Herman J. served in the United
States Navy on the USS Pennsylvania in WWI; and in WWII. two
sons Herman and George served, and at least seven grandsons or
grandsons-in-law.
William Herman Fischer died at age 71 on 30
Aug 1944; his wife Annie lived almost 4 yrs more, dying at age
73 on 13 May 1948.
