Selected War Memorials
Allegheny County, Pennsylvania
Swisshelm Park, Pittsburgh (14th Ward), PA

Swisshelm Park, Pittsburgh, 14th Ward, World War One Memorial:

This memorial is located next to the firehouse at the intersection of Commercial and Homestead Streets in
Swisshem Park, 14th Ward, Pittsburgh . The inscription at the top says:
"THIS TABLET ERECTED BY THE RESIDENTS OF THE 5TH DISTRICT, 14TH WARD, CITY OF PITTSBURGH"

The bottom of the plaque reads:
"GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN, THAN TO LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR
FELLOW MAN"

While there is no direct reference to World War One on the tablet, there are images of
both a WWI-style battleship, as well as a WWI-style airplane incorporated into the
bronze. According to records at the Carnegie Library branch in nearby Swissvale, money
for this monument was collected in the last few months of World War I (known then
only as "The World War" or "The Great War") and the plaque was erected shortly after
the war ended on November 11, 1918. The names listed are of those who served,
including two who made the supreme sacrifice (with stars next to their names). The
library information says that two trees were planted nearby in memory of William A.
Allerton and Walter H. Clark. It is not clear if any of the trees nearby are those planted in
their memory.
