This memorial was dedicated in April, 1974 to honor Swissvale residents who served in the
Armed Forces and to memorialize those who made the supreme sacrifice during all wars. It is
located alongside the Swissvale Borough Building at the corner of Rosyln and South Braddock
Avenues. For many years, there was a temporary memorial at this site listing all of the residents
of Swissvale who served during World War Two. This permanent replacement was dedicated in
April, 1974. Companion memorials for 20th century wars, with names listed, are located at the
Carnegie Free Library of Swissvale (not a branch of the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh,
and it is supported by the Woodland Hills School District), on the other side of the Borough.
The Borough of Swissvale had more men (and women) in the service during World War Two
than any other community, per capita.
The inscription reads:
"ERECTED BY THE CITIZENS OF SWISSVALE IN HONOR OF THOSE WHO SERVED IN
THE ARMED FORCES OF THE UNITED STATES AND IN MEMORY OF THOSE WHO
MADE THE SUPREME SACRIFICE"
