WASHINGTON FIRE.
The Adams and Knox Express Companies Heavy Losers.
WASHINGTON, July 25. – At 3 o’clock this morning the warehouse and stables of the Knox Express company on Second street was destroyed by fire. Three firemen lost their lives. Over 200 horses and nearly all of the company’s express wagons and contents of the storage building, were burned. The Adams express stable adjoining was entirely consumed. One hundred and fifty persons were rescued with difficulty. Eight residences near the Knox building were also destroyed. The loss exceeds a quarter of a million dollars; insurance unknown. Washington’s Fatal Fire.
WASHINGTON, July 26. – The fire which destroyed the stables of the George W. Knox Express company yesterday morning also destroyed two small frame residences in the rear and damaged six other residences. Over 200 horses were burned to death and three firemen killed. The dead firemen are: SAMUEL E. MASTIN, MICHAEL FENTON and DENNIS DONOGHUE. Four other firemen were badly injured and had to be taken to the Emergency hospital.
