"CHARLES NOCKS IS MARRIED
Charles H. Nocks, A.D.I., U. S. Navy, was united in marriage with Mildred Johnson in a double wedding at Pocomoke City, Ind.(sic), June 10. The other principals were Ruth Johnson and Earl Gordon of Bordentown, NJ. Rev. John Ditto officiated. The brides are daughters of Walter Johnson. The groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Nocks of Troy and has been in the Navy eight years. He is stationed at the naval air station on the island of Chincoteague, Va., where the couple will make their home. Charles is a radar man."
*********************************************
Charlie retired from the US Navy with a rank of ADR1. Moving his family to Gainesville, FL after retiring, he wished to pursue a degree in elementary education at the University of Florida. He found, however, that he could not support his family and purchase a home on his Navy retirement income; he started working part-time and then quit college to work full-time to support Millie and his daughters.

Charlie worked for the Unversity of Florida in Williamson Hall, setting up physics experiments for classes and repairing anything that broke, as well as filling in for several professors, who learned that Charlie could, and would, teach, if they failed to show up for class. After being offered a job in a partnership, Charlie left UF and worked for Sigma Scientific, Inc. The co-owner, who dealt with the business, advertising, and payment part of the business, embezzled money from the company, used trade-marked materials without permission, and did not pay Charlie, except with company stock certificates. (Later, the State of Florida said the stock certificates might be pretty enough to use as wall paper, but were otherwise without any value.) Sigma Scientific failed.

Charlie then gained work with Norwood Hope, a real estate developer. Charlie ran the sewage and water plants for Mr. Hope, as well as directing the road crew in care of all the roads in the various sections. The county bought out Norwood Hope, and Charlie became Assistant Superindent of (Alachua) County Roads, where he worked until his death.

Charlie's last residence was at 312 S.E. 50th Street, Gainesville, Florida. The phone number was Franklin 6-2268.
Charlie was cremated, as per his wishes. His ashes were scattered in the Chincoteague Channel near the old Lollipop (now the Chincoteague Inn).

Charles married Mildred Louise Johnson "Millie" daughter of John Walter Johnson and Aleda Peterson on 10 Jun 1948. Mildred was born on 28 Jan 1921 in Chincoteague Island, Accomack County, Virginia. She died on 3 Nov 2001 in Boulder, Boulder County, Colorado.

Millie's mother died when Millie was in her early teens, and Betty, her older sister, had already married and left the house, leaving Millie to raise her two younger siblings, Howard and Ruth. Cap'n Walt, Millie's father, was a fisherman and net-mender on Chincoteague; and frequently left the house at 2 a.m. to catch the tide, or go out on someone's boat to assist. She grew up having her own boat, a bateau, and the family raised vegetables, chickens and an occasional pig. Millie remembers feeding the chickens a jar of peach preserves that had exploded in the pantry; the preserves had fermented, and she and her friends and family laughed uproariously over the drunken chickens stumbling about.

Millie had a massive stroke in 1993, and a year later was diagnosed with Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. The family kept her at home for three years, then moved her to a local nursing home. Millie was very happy her last day - she told her attendants and aides that she'd been to a big party at the Killock Shoals light, and had had a marvelous time. She choked during lunch on a piece of food, and the attendant used the Heimlich manuever to dislodge the item. Several hours later her heart stopped.

Millie was cremated, as per her wishes. Her ashes were scattered in the Chincoteague Channel, where she had scattered her husband's ashes.

Charles and Mildred had the following children:

+ 1749 F i Kathy Jo Nocks
1750 F ii Betty Ann Nocks
Betty married Jeffrey Dale Devine son of Stanley Hugh Devine and Bernice Lorraine Gardinier. Jeffrey was born on 11 Mar 1948 in City of Alexandria, Virginia. He died on 6 Nov 2003 in Crows, Alleghaney County, Virginia.

Jeffey was cremated, as per his wishes. His remains travel with his wife.

1442. Irvin Verene Nocks (James Vernon Nocks , James Loren Nocks , Benjamin Knox , Ebenezer (Eben) Nocks , Reuben , Ebenezer (twin) , Sylvanus , Sylvanus , Thomas ) was born on 27 Apr 1916 in Kansas. He died on 9 Nov 1975 in Belen, New Mexico. He was buried in Terrace Grove Memorial Gardens, Belen, New Mexico.

Irvin was raised by his Aunt and Uncle, Lola Nocks Smith and Fred Smith, in Troy, KS. They then raised Irvin's sons, as well.
