HON. NOAH M. GIVAN - Harrisonville

NOAH MONROE GIVAN, judge of the 7th judicial circuit, is a son of George and Sabrina (Hall) Givan, and was born at Manchester, Dearborn County, Indiana, December 1, 1840. His father, a farmer, was a native of Maryland, and his mother of Indiana. Some of the Givan family aided in gaining the independence of the colonies. Noah received an academic education at Manchester; spent three years at Franklin College, that state, leaving at the close of the junior year, and was graduated at the state university, in Bloomington, in 1862. While preparing for college, and during his college course of studies, he supported himself by teaching school, commencing the day he was sixteen years old. When only 19 years of age, he was principal of the Manchester Academy one year, and was principal of the Lawrenceburgh, Indiana graded schools, after receiving the degree of bachelor of arts. Meanwhile, in August 1862, he was married to Miss Lizzie C. Jackson, of Manchester, and they have had four children, burying all but one daughter, Mabel, who is married to Charles E. Allen of Pierce City, MO.
While Mr. Givan was teaching at Lawrenceburgh, he gave his spare time to the reading of law, and there finished his legal studies with James T. Brown, an eminent lawyer, and was admitted to practice in 1864.
In 1866 he came to this state, was admitted to the bar of Harrisonville, and was in successful practice here until he was elected to the circuit bench in September 1877, to fill an unexpired term. He was reelected in November 1880. His district is composed of Cass and Johnson counties. His politics are democratic.
While at the bar, Judge Givan showed that he was very well read in his profession, and that he had a good legal mind, and a sound judgement. He was a discreet counselor, and a logical reasoner, and made a marked success as a practitioner.
As a judge, he is cool, dispassionate, considerate, and impartial, letting nothing bias his judgement. He is courteous and kind to the bar, a patient listener, and very careful in arriving at conclusions. He is popular with the legal fraternity and with the people, and feared by none but evil doers.
Judge Givan has been for several years a member of the Masonic Fraternity; has been presiding officer of the Harrisonville lodge, and grand master of the grand lodge of the state, and at the same time, grand high priest of the chapter. He is also grand dictator of the Knights of Honor of the state, and one of the best known men in such orders in Missouri. The judge is a stockholder in the Bank of Harrisonville, and very comfotably situated in life. He is a member of the Baptist Church, and a man of solid character.
In September 1883, in the absence of Judge McGregor in Colorado, on account of ill health, our subject sat the bench for him and gave such excellent satisfaction that at the close of the term, the bar in Jasper county passed the following resolutions:
"Resolved: that the bar of Jasper county are under lasting obligations to Judge N. M. Givan for holding the present term of our circuit court, in the enforced absence of the judge of our circuit court; that by his thorough knowledge of the law, his keen sense of justice, his strict impartiality, and uniform kindness, he has shown himself worthy of a seat on the bench of the highest court of the land; that though he came among us a stranger he takes with him to his home the kindest regards and warm affectionof every member of the bar who has appeared before him."
An elegant copy of these resolutions was furnished the judge, and published at the time in the local papers.

He was also a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity.

Sanford married Phoebe Emily Platt daughter of Richard Platt and Emeline Clark on 25 Oct 1868 in Dearborn County, Indiana. The marriage ended in divorce.Phoebe was born on 10 Dec 1848 in Dearborn County, Indiana.

Some sources note that Phoebe was divorced from Sanford in 1874. I have not been able to document this.

In the 1880 US Census for Washington Twp., Ripley County, Indiana, Phoebe Givan is listed with her two eldest sons as keeping house and living with William Burbage (who was the enumerator of the 1880 Census there). As the two youngest sons were born in Missouri, it's a possibility that they are not the sons of Sanford Givan, but of another man (possibly William Burbage?).
In the 1900 US Census Phoebe and her sons live in Clay Twp., Decatur County, Indiana.
In the 1910 US Census, Phoebe lives in Indianapolis with her son Athur and his family.

Sanford and Phoebe had the following children:

+ 1189 M i Arthur C. Givan
1190 M ii Omer M. Givan was born in Jan 1875 in Missouri.
Omer married Estella in 1905 in Indiana. Estella was born in Jul 1888 in Indiana.
