Jacob Pedersen Hillestad and Anna Lindberg Hillestad
Jacob Hillestad was born on February 13, 1870 in Hafslo, Sogn, Norway to Peder Ivarsen Hillestad and Marta Jakobsdatter H�ri. He came to America in 1891 and stayed for a short time in Wisconsin, presumably with his uncle Andrew Hillestad in Sauk County. He next lived in Steele County, Minnesota, where his uncle Christ Hillestad lived. In 1895 Jacob moved to Fosston, Minnesota and went to work for his uncle Iver at the I.I. Hillestad Clothing and General Store. On May 18, 1901 Jacob married Anna Lindberg in Crookston, Minnesota and in 1903 they moved to Edmore, North Dakota. There Jacob ran a general store with his brother-in-law John Lindberg. Returning to Fosston in 1910, Jacob went into his uncle John Hillestad's hardware business. In 1925, Jacob started his own grocery business, retiring in the mid-1930s. Jacob and Anna had four children, the two oldest born in Edmore and the youngest two in Fosston: Parnell (b. abt. 1903); Lloyd Kindred (b. April 18, 1906); Marvin Sidney (b. September 13, 1911) and Lucille Irene (b. April 2, 1916). Anna died May 28, 1916 in Fosston, possibly from complications relating to Lucille's birth. Jacob survived her by more than 35 years, dying on May 29, 1952 in Fosston.
I. Parnell Hillestad (b. abt. 1903 in Edmore, ND) married Elsie Prill in Nevis, Minnesota. They had three children: Parnell, Charles and Noma. Parnell Sr. was a lineman for Northwestern Bell Telephone Company and they lived first in Mankato, MN, then in Shakopee. Elsie died December 17, 1963 in Shakopee; Parnell died June 11, 1968, also in Shakopee.II. Lloyd Hillestad (b. April 18, 1906 in Edmore, ND) married Lucille Johnson (b. August 22, 1910) on August 28, 1932 in Fosston. They had four children: David, John, Chris and Karen. Lloyd worked for a car company in Detroit before moving to Stuart, Florida, where he died in April of 1982. Lucille died in January of 1995.
III. Marvin Hillestad (b. September 13, 1911 in Fosston, MN) married Lillian Constance Haagenson (b. January 17, 1913) on September 25, 1937 in Bemidj, MN. They had three children: Bruce, Karen and Steven. At various times, Marvin was the manager of the Rosebud Oil Company in Fosston, office manager and part owner of Haagenson Tranby Construction Company, part owner of Northern Sand and Gravel in Trail, MN, and a former postmaster in Fosston. He retired in 1971. Marvin died April 15, 1993 at the hospital in Fosston.
IV. Lucille Hillestad (b. April 2, 1916) married Darwin DeFrang, who was born in 1919. They had three children: Anne, Linda and Susan. Darwin died October 11, 1978 in St. Louis Park, MN. Lucille died September 29, 1980, also in St. Louis Park.
