Delilah4 Poston (Elias3, William2, John1) was born in 1783, the daughter of Elias3 Poston and his wife, Rebecca Cheshire , probably in Hampshire County, Virginia. In 8 November 1801, she married Benjamin Slane (born 1773, probably in Hampshire County, the son of Daniel Slane , born ca. 1745 in County Tyrone, Ireland, died 1795 in Hampshire County, and his wife Ann). In the summer of 1802 when her father wrote his will, he specifically mentions that Delilah4 had already received some of her portion of his estate.

Delilah4 appears to have lived in Hampshire County for several years and then to have moved to Ohio. There is some confusion, however, as their son Benjamin who married Delilah Cheshire is known to have moved to Perry County, Ohio, and then to Illinois. It is not always clear, when Benjamin and Delilah Slane are mentioned, whether it is the younger couple or the parents that are meant. Benjamin Slane, husband of Delilah Poston died in 1842 in Hampshire County. Delilah4 died in Peoria County, Illinois, 31 March 1850. There is yet an additional puzzle whether or not Benjamin Slane the younger is a son of Delilah4 Poston or that he may be the son of a Daniel's putative first wife. Certainly, whether Delilah4 was the biological mother of Benjamin or not, she was the woman who raised him.
