Colusa County

For thirty-seven years Thomas Rutledge has practiced law in Colusa and during this period has exemplified the highest ideals of his profession. He has commanded a large and important practice and has been connected as counsel with many of the leading cases tried in the courts of this and neighboring counties. He was born at Madelia, Watonwan County, Minnesota, on the 27th of July, 1864, and when about twelve years of age accompanied his parents on their removal to Santa Rosa, California, and in the public schools of that city received his education. He took up the study of law in the office of his father, who was one of the leading members of the bar at that place, and was admitted to practice in 1887. He was associated with his father until 1893, when he moved to Colusa, where he has long enjoyed marked prestige as a learned and capable attorney. In 1927 he admitted his son Ralph W. to a partnership, and the firm of Rutledge and Rutledge is regarded as one of the strongest and most successful law firms of this locality. They conduct a general practice, but specialize as reclamation attorneys, and are attorneys for the Colusa County Bank

Mr. Rutledge was united in marriage to Miss Carrie Ernst, who was born and reared in Los Angeles, California, and they are the parents of two sons, Clifford and Ralph W. The latter was graduated from the law school of the University of California in 1927 and has since been associated with his father in practice. He is a member of the Colusa Rotary Club and the Chamber of Commerce. Mr., Rutledge is a Democrat in his political affiliation and has been active in the councils of his party, being a member of its central committee. He is a thirty-second degree Scottish Rite Mason, and a member of Ben Ali Temple, A. A. O. N. M. S., at Sacramento, and the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. He also belongs to the Colusa Chamber of Commerce. He commands the highest respect on the part of his fellowmen and is recognized as one of the representative citizen of his community.
