The Old Trail
Cemetery used to be known as the Trail - Tadanac Cemetery, and was located
further down near the town of Trail.
new smelter was to be built, the City of Trail contacted descendants
of each family buried in Trail - Tadanac, and got permission to move
every body in the Trail- Tadanac cemetery to the new cemetery (Old Trail)
off of Highway 3.
bodies were moved, all the headstones left in Trail - Tadanac were placed
in the very back of the new Old Trail cemetery, with the actual bodies
being buried on the flat grass in front of the tombstones.
We have been
told by relatives of the people buried in the Old Trail Cemetery, that
the cemetery wasn't kept up for some time. As you walk through the cemetery,
you can tell that markers are missing in spots, have been over grown
by grass, or have been damaged.
a sense of disarray at this cemetery, because you see groups of the
same family buried in a miss-match fashion, not at all next to each
other. A husband could be rows away from his wife, or children buried
rows away from parents, for instance.
also not a very good record of the burials in this cemetery, because
you will see Baby _, who was 2 years old when he/she died. Obviously,
the baby would have had a name, but for some reason when the bodies
were relocated to the new cemetery, not a very good job of marking them
took place, you also see many graves with just a last name on them,
and many graves with the same names on them, and no dates.
that is on the grave markers will be posted here. Sometimes all there
is, is just a last name, many times, no dates. I will place dates on
the ones that have them. (In other words, I can not provide you with
any more information on people in this cemetery).
be part one of transcriptions for this
cemetery. This will be the listings for the South side of
the Old Trail Cemetery. I will go back and transcribe the North
side of the Old Trail Cemetery in Spring of 2003.
