Mother Heroic Struggle with an Impaired Cow to Save Imperiled Child
A Mother's heroic fight with a vicious cow which had attacked her 7 year old son, came near ending in a tragedy Saturday night. It was only due to her presence of mind and strength at a critical moment that she is alive today. It was the Romulus of Siencklwitz with a woman playing the part. At 7 o'clock Saturday night, Mrs Nuckolls, wife of Police Officer Fred Nuckolls finished milking the family cow. Her son Henry, aged 7 years, had been playing around her and as they started to drive the cow into its pen, the boy got into the pathway of the animal. It took after him and was chasing the frightened child around the enclosure when Mrs Nuckolls picked up a stick and succeeded in diverting its attention. The animal which had become frantic turned upon her and drove her into a corner
from which she could not escape. She was knocked down, but in falling, grasped the horns of the cow and held on to them as only one attuned by desperation could. The cow stamped upon her foot and limbs as she struggled with it. Its hot breath, as she tried to release herself, fanned her face. Try as she would, she could not regain her feet although she still held on to the horns of the cow. The little boy, meanwhile, seeing his
mother's predicament, picked up a stick and ran to her rescue. He belabored the animal as best he could but it paid no attention to him. Finally, by a great effort, Mrs Nuckolls twisted the cow's head until the great creature fell over on its side. She then got upon her feet and crying to the boy to run, she staggered out of the enclosure and slamming the gate, dropped the bar just as the cow came charging after her.. The boy ran into an out house and hid until he had a chance to slip out. Mr Nuckolls was away from home at the time. The boy helped his mother who had fallen, exhausted, into the house and then ran for a doctor. He secured Dr R B west and hurried with him back home. Mrs Nuckolls was placed in bed and the doctor after examining her injuries said that she would recover but that every care would be necessary. Her limbs from the knee down are one mass of lacerations and bruises where the cow stepped on them, and her hands are torn between the fingers and in the palms showing t he evidence of her efforts to hold the cow off her. Mrs Nuckolls was se en yesterday afternoon resting easily. She was not permitted to talk much about the encounter. She said that she remembered very little about it save that when she saw the cow charging upon her little boy and heard him cry for help to her, she darted after it with a stick. When she had turned its attention from the boy, she tried to escape but the animal was too swift for her. She did not recall much after that beyond what was given above. The cow has been giving signs of ill-temper towards children for some time but heretofore had been quite docile with her. Officer Nuckolls said yesterday that he would saw off the cow's horns today and keep it tied up.
