The Mastens of Sullivan County

The Mastens of Sullivan Co.

Sullivan Co., NY, Mastens and how they grew!

Since some of the Masten line don't seem to want to claim us as one of theirs (and we are a pretty nice bunch, let me tell you that, and good-looking and rich, too)we'll just go our own way and perhaps connect to some cousins we have lost along the wayside. We'll go WAY back in time to the first proven (or at least accepted for the time being) Masten, John, who was listed as an English Soldier (Uytenglandt) when he attended the baptism of a child in the Dutch Colony of New Amsterdam.

John Masten, servant, age 20, left England from Ormby, Norfolk, Eng., for the Dutch colonies, making his birthdate about 1617. In 1644 Gov. Kieft gave land patents to 14 Englishmen, John being one of them.

In 1658 he was constable in Flushing, L.I., making him the same as Chief Magestrate. This info. from Bill Goldstein His email address is further down among the children) So, we do not accept the premis that we are descended from the family of Marsdens.

    Clement Thornton Masten

Son of Clement Thornton Masten and Vivienne Gardner, born 14 Jul 1928, NJ. Moved at an early age to CT. Had an older sister, Patricia, born 21 Jul 1925. He was born with blond hair which turned dark, and it was rather curly when he was small. He has a sharp mathematical mind, missing membership in Mensa by 1/2 point. He is interested in History, Georgraphy, Astronomy, Medicine--anything scientific.

His father died when he was 9 leaving this small boy as man of the household. His father called him in as his father was about to die and told him Webb would be the man of the house now. His mother went out to work and their grandmother came to stay until she died in 1940. He and Pat took care of things after Grandma died while mother worked.

They must have had it rough but he talks happily of the neighborhood of many children and he enjoyed school. He loves to read and learn and most of what he reads is educational. He is extremely generous looking for ways to help those in need. He is pleasant, very disciplined and orderly. He loves to dance and travel. His first wife died leaving him with 2 daughters and one grandson--so far. He has a wife who loves him and enjoys his sense of humor. Does he sound like a typical Masten?
