Donald W. "Don" Erickson
After Commissioning, I was an Adjutant in one of the
basic training squadrons for a short time, then went to
Keesler AFB at Biloxi and entered the Communications-Electronics
field. Assignments in
Trabzon, Turkey(Detachment Commander),
Maxwell AFB Alabama,
Clark AFB Philippines (DCA-SEA),
Keesler AFB MS (instructor at C-E Staff Officer course),
Johnston Island (Commander 2194th Comm Sq.),
Colorado Springs (Computer Maint Officer
in NORAD Cheyenne Mt.),
Washington state (Sq. Commander of two radar sites - Othello, then
Blaine),
and then
back to Colorado Springs (NORAD Cheyenne Mt).
I waited long enough to see if I was going to make Lt. Col. the
first time in the primary zone, and I didn't. So, I
retired as a Major in 1977, residing in Colorado Springs.
I am very glad I stayed in the Air Force as long as I did, and I am
also very glad I retired when I did.
Since then, I worked at the University of Colorado in Colorado Springs,
also obtained a
Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.
I took an early retirement from the University in early 1996 (I was
totally fed up with the University environment).
In January 1997, I went to work for Digital Computer Corp, later
bought out by Compaq Computer Corp, doing telephone customer support work for their
UNIX computers (not PCs). I retired from there in March 2001, when
I turned 65. Now, I can concentrate on genealogy, woodworking, fishing,
ham radio, shooting and a
little traveling.
Liz and I have been married 42 years, and we have 3 grown children and 5 grandchildren.
Life is good.
