WEST POINT

(Special to The Times-Dispatch)

West Point, Va., September 14—The crowning event of the week happened on Wednesday evening when S. L. THOMAS, formerly secretary of the Railroad Y. M. C. A., of Richmond, spoke in the First Baptist Church. The building was filled literally to overflowing, for more standing room (four words illegible) and many were compelled to stand outside. After spending eight months in France, fresh from the front and firing line, he told of many things that the newspapers could never have told in the same way.

Miss Marian LEWIS has been appointed Supervisor of the Surgical Dressings Department of the Red Cross Chapter.

Charles BRAY, who is in the hospital department of the navy, is now on a ten-days’ furlough, visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Van Lew BRAY.

Mrs. PURCELL was originally from King and Queen’s County and has many friends and relatives throughout this section.

L. D. LACY, a West Point boy, reared here, the son of Mr. and Mrs. W. D. LACY, of West Point, has been honored by the New York State Electrical Association, by being elected as their secretary and treasurer and, at their annual convention at the Eggleston Hotel in Rochester, N. Y., he was elected delegate to the State Federation and a member of the legislative committee.

Ragland EUBANKS, Superintendent of Schools in King William County, has appointed Lewis MULFORD of West Point, Va., holder of the scholarship in the University of Virginia from King William County, as authorized by an act of the Legislature of 1918. Mr. EUBANKS has also nominated as eligible to fill any vacant scholarship, for the State-at-large, Barnet POWELL, of the Mangohick District of King William County.

Sergeant Andrew Broaddus BROOKS, of West Point, has been appointed as a member of minstrel troupe to entertain soldiers over in France. For years he has delighted his townspeople with his songs and impersonations.

Mrs. Charles W. PUMPHEREY of Hotel O’CONNOR, has bought the beautiful property that formerly belonged to the Wilkinson estate, corner of D and Sixth Streets. Captain C. W. WESTBURY and wife have been occupying it for several months.

PULASKI

Pulaski, Va., September 14—Re. E. BOYD, of Bristol, director of the war savings stamps movement in the Ninth District, and C. C. BURNS, of Lebanon, Va., spent several days in Pulaski County this week in the interest of stamp sales. Well attended meetings were held here Wednesday night and at Dublin that afternoon. The meeting here resulted in $10,000 additional sales within the audience. All effort is being made by these gentlemen to put the Ninth District over the top of its allotment.

Ashland, Va.--September 14—An attractive "farewell" party was given this afternoon in the home of Mrs. (?) L. FAY in honor of Misses Alice DAVISON, Mary GOODWIN, Stuart BLANTON, Marjorie RIKER and Mrs. Shirley (?) who are leaving Monday for New York, preparatory for overseas work with the Y. M. C. A. unit. The home was decorated with the allied flags and during the afternoon the allied songs were sung, after which the hostess served dainty refreshments.

Mrs. T. A. GRAY Elected President of Bi-County W. C. T. U.—Radford Normal in Closer Touch This Year With Smaller Schools.

FARMVILLE, VA., September 14—The thirty-fifth session of the State Normal School for Women opened on Wednesday morning with exercises in the auditorium of the school. Rev. C. P. HOLBROOK presided over the exercises, and after scripture reading and prayer, he made the welcome address to the pupils on behalf of the ministers of the town, extending a cordial welcome to attend the Sunday school and church services in the various churches.

Dr. J. L. JARMAN, president, then made a brief talk welcoming the girls and giving words of cheer and helpfulness to them in their beginning of the school work.

Miss COULLING, of the faculty, announced the various committees for the arrangement of the work, and made announcement of special classes during the session.

There were 481 present at the beginning of the session, and the school expects to have about the usual number enrolled in a few days.
