Births, marriages, deaths, Washington Post, Oct. 8, 1918

These are births, marriages and deaths from THE WASHINGTON POST, Tuesday, October 8, 1918:

Gen. DOYEN to Be BURIED At Arlington Tomorrow; Distinguished Fighter

Brig. Gen. Charles A. DOYEN, commandant of the marine corps training station at Quantico, Va., who died Sunday night, a victim of influenza, will be buried with military honors at Arlington Cemetery at 3 o’clock tomorrow afternoon.

When the body left Quantico for Washington yesterday 200 officers and 1,700 men, including the British, French and Canadian officers attached to the camp, formed an impressive escort from the hospital to the train.

The death of Gen. DOYEN, who commanded the First regiment of the marine corps sent to France with the American expeditionary forces, shocked official Washington, as he had been ill only a few days. The strain of his duties overseas brought on ill health and he was transferred to the United States to avoid a physical breakdown. His health improved.

When Gen. DOYEN went to France in June, 1917, he held the rank of colonel and was in command of a regiment, but in October he was promoted to brigadier general.

Gen. PERSHING and Maj. Gen. Omar BUNDY, U.S.A., who commanded the American division of which Gen. DOYEN’s brigade was a part, made glowing reports of his services.

Gen. DOYEN was born September 3, 1859, in New Hampshire. He had seen 35 years’ service in the marine corps, to which he was transferred two years after his graduation from Annapolis in 1881. Besides frequent tours of duty at sea, he had served with the marines in the Philippines, Cuba and Santo Domingo. During the Spanish-American war he was in command of the marine corps guard on the auxiliary cruiser St. Paul.

He is survived by his wife, a daughter, and an adopted daughter, Mrs. Jason McV. AUSTIN, of Delaware, Ohio, and his mother, Mrs. Mary E. DOYEN, of Concord, N. H.

Secretary of the Navy DANIELS sent a message of condolence to Mrs. DOYEN last night, in which he said Gen. DOYEN had been an ornament of the corps.

Midshipman and Nurse Dead

(Special to The Washington Post)

Annapolis, Md., Oct. 7—Robert G. CAMPBELL, jr., of New Orleans, a member of the graduating class, died at the Naval Hospital this morning, making the fourth midshipman to die of influenza. Miss Gladys W. WIGLEY, a contract nurse, whose home is near Annapolis, died of pneumonia following influenza.

About thirty, half of whom are midshipmen, are ill of pneumonia at the hospital.

NEWS OF ALEXANDRIA

Washington Post Bureau

703 King street, Alexandria, Virginia

Spanish influenza caused comparatively few deaths in this city yesterday. Dr. W. L. WOOD, of the United States public health service, in charge of the situation here, states last night that about 2,000 cases were under treatment, but that he considered the epidemic on the wane. Last night there were eighteen patients in Christ Church parish hall, which has been converted into a temporary hospital. Should it become necessary, it is understood, the parish hall of St. Paul’s Church will be opened for sufferers from the disease and nurses will be provided. A number of women went to Camp Humphreys yesterday morning in response to an appeal from Maj. NEWHOUSE, the medical officer in charge there, to assist the Red Cross nurses, and others are expected to volunteer to go to the camp this morning. Women who are willing to go to the camp have been requested to report at the rooms of the chamber of commerce at 10 o’clock this morning.

AERO GUN KILLS A MAN IN CAMP

Three Others Wounded at Long Island—Plane Accident Blamed

New York, Oct. 14—Bullets from a machine gun presumed to have been inadvertently fired from an army airplane in flight killed one soldier and wounded three others as the men were drilling in formation today at Camp Mills, Long Island.

William H. HALL, private, McLeansboro, Ill., died from a wound in the head.

Samuel M. LOWRY, lieutenant, Summit, Pa., was shot in the arm.

William H. BIVENS, private, Avon, Ill., was shot in the back.

Lewis J. SIMMONS, private, Danville, Ill., was wounded by a bullet.

The army and aviation authorities have not succeeded in identifying the airplane, which at the time of the accident was not seen at the camp. Observers elsewhere reported seeing an airplane in the neighborhood flying very high and which had come from the ocean side of the island. It was the theory of the aviation officers that the airplane while engaged in target practice, suddenly dipped, thus unintentionally directing a stream of bullets earthward.
