J. A. STERLING DIES IN AUTO ACCIDENT

Illinois Representative Is Thrown Down Embankment

Bloomington, Ill, Oct. 17—Representative John A. STERLING, of this city, was killed in an automobile accident two miles south of Pontiac today. Representative STERLING, his law partner, W. W. WHITMORE and Mrs. WHITMORE, were motoring from Bloomington to Pontiac when the accident happened.

Mrs. WHITMORE was driving and in making a turn ran off an embankment six or seven feet deep. The car turned over and struck Mr. STERLING on the head, killing him.

Mr. WHITMORE’s right leg was broken. Miss Anna LANGE, who was the fourth occupant of the car, also was slightly injured. Mrs. WHITMORE escaped unhurt.

Announcement of Representative STERLING’s death was made yesterday afternoon by Representative CANNON and the House then adjourned out of respect to the memory of the dead member. Speaker CLARK announced that he would today name a committee to represent the House at the funeral along with the committee on behalf of the Senate which will be named by Vice President MARSHALL.

The news of Mr. STERLING’s death brought profound sorrow to his colleagues in the House. As a member of the ways and means committee, Mr. STERLING had worked assiduously in the preparation of the $8,000,000,000 [since this number is split onto two lines, I wonder if it was 8 million instead of 8 billion] war revenue bill, now pending before the Senate finance committee. He was serving his seventh term in Congress, and as ranking Republican member of the judiciary committee would have advanced to the chairmanship in the event of Republican ascendancy in the next House.

Mr. STERLING was 61 years old and a native of LeRoy, Ill. After graduating from Illinois Wesleyan University he was for two years superintendent of the public schools of Lexington, Ill., before his admission to the bar at Bloomington in 1884, since which time he had practiced in that city. His wife, formerly Miss Clara M. IRONS, survives.

Mr. STERLING’s death is the second to occur among members of the House in two days, Representative MEEKER, of Missouri, having died Wednesday.
