     Joel Hurt BURT, son of Zacheus BURT and Elizabeth BURT, was born on 2 January 1807 in Warren County, Georgia.1

He was probably the male age 10 to 16 listed in the household of his father, Zacheus BURT, in the 1820 Federal Census of Capt Thomas Bustins District, Putnam County, Georgia.

Joel married Mildred Ann OWEN, daughter of Daniel Grant OWEN and Sarah WILLIS, on 17 January 1833 in Talbot County, Georgia.2,3

Joel Hurt BURT was a planter. Joel and Mildred's plantation was near Pleasant Hill, in Talbot County, and on the old stage route that crossed Georgia from Milledgeville to where Columbus is today. Joel died fourteen years after their marriage and forty-three years before his wife's death in 1890. Mildred managed the plantation and reared the children with the help of her family who lived on nearby plantations.

Joel saw military service circa 1835 in the Second Seminole War (1835-1842.)

On 8 June 1847 Joel Hurt died in Pleasant Hill, Talbot County, Georgia, at age 40 leaving Mildred Ann a widow.1,4 He was buried in Owen Cemetery, Woodland, Talbot County, Georgia.
