Except where otherwise noted, all personnel served in the British forces and are classed by CWGC as ‘Commonwealth War Dead’.  

Each entry is listed: surname, first names (or initials), rank, Service/Unit, age, date of death, regimental or service number, next of kin (WW2 entries have less detail), grave section and number (or screen wall details for those buried in public graves).  Additional material has been added in italics.

CWGC used roman numerals when listing some of the sections, but these have been converted to match current cemetery practice.

Even with the aid of detailed layout plans, some graves or plots have not been traced;  the numbering sequences do not appear to follow any logical pattern, especially where subsequent graves have been added to earlier sections.  Many graves are unmarked by a headstone.

The symbol ^ has been used to denote those whose names are on the Town Hall Roll of Honour which covers only WW1 and is far from a complete or accurate record.

Australian records show that Brooks was born in Liverpool and enlisted at Newcastle NSW on 19/7/1916 giving his occupation as ‘railway fettler’.  He was 32 years old.  He arrived at Plymouth with his battalion on 9/1/17 but was almost immediately admitted to Fargo Military Hospital on Salisbury Plain with acute bronchitis, from which he died.  He was entitled to the British War Medal which was sent to his father in Liverpool, as was the Memorial plaque.

After training as a Pilot, he was posted to 5 OTU, Aston Down in May 1940. Converting to Hurricanes he was then posted to No. 245 Squadron at Aldergrove on 17 July. He then moved to No. 501 Squadron at Kenley in September 1940. In action with Bf109s over Redhill on 15 October 1940, Fenemore was shot down and killed. His Hurricane, V.6722 crashed at Postern Gate Farm, Godstone. Aged 20 years at the time of his death, he was buried in Liverpool (Allerton) Cemetery. A memorial bench bearing the above plaque was placed beside the field in which Sergeant Pilot Fenemore crashed. 246 Squadron of Coastal Command was stationed at Bowmore, operating Sunderland flying boats from Loch Indaal.  On the evening of Sunday, January 24, 1943, Sunderland flying boat MK111 DV was returning to base, low on fuel, and in less than ideal weather. After circling the loch a number of times, the aircraft made its approach, but appears to have struck the ground on its final approach, possibly due to the prevailing winds, and crashed on he beach, just short of the loch.  Tragically, although most of the crew escaped the initial crash, they returned to the wreckage to free the rear gunner, trapped in the wreckage – just at the moment the depth charges aboard exploded, killing all nine present. Only the captain and two comrades survived, having sustained injuries in the crash, they had made their way to the slopes below the beach.

This squadron was formed 23 October 1916 at Doncaster by redesignating an element of 15 Reserve Squadron. It became 46 Training Squadron, RFC on 31 May 1917. On 15  July 1918 the squadron was disbanded at Catterick, North Yorkshire where it merged with 52 Training Squadron to become 49 Training Depot Squadron.

The death of a John J. Jones was registered at Bedale, North Yorkshire in the second quarter of 1918.  He was piloting a two-seater DH6 trainer when it had engine trouble and on landing he was killed when hit by the propeller.  Before his commission into the RAF in Feb 1918 he had won the Military Medal as a corporal in the Royal Engineers [London Gazette supplement 16 Nov 1917].From 1913-1914 he was a student at Liverpool University.  His father lived at 15 Sandhurst Street, Liverpool.

From the history of St Charles Borromeo, Aigburth Road:

A poignant reminder of the suffering that the Great War 1914-1918, brought to families is palpable in the window given by Mr. Emile Purgold in memory of his two sons who gave their lives for their country in August 1917. The kneeling figures of the two khaki-clad servicemen Raymond and Louis are each supported by their patron saints, of Ransom and Crusader fame respectively Dominant is the figure of the Eucharistic Lord. The figure of Raymond is detailed with boots, spurs and calthrops, and on the border below is the badge of the King's Liverpool - the spirited charger. Louis wears puttees. His cap, like his brothers is on the floor beside him, and like his brother his hands are clasped but his head is bent forward. As a member of the Royal Flying Corps the badge depicted is wings in a feathered circle and laurel wreath.

The ADC 527 was a British Mark IV Landing Craft Tank converted at the end of the war for ammunition disposal, hence the prefix ADC (Ammunition Dumping Craft).  She and two other vessels were on route from Silloth to Cairn Ryan with a cargo of ammunition when they ran into a storm.  The two other vessels veered away to the shelter of the Isle of Man, but the unwieldy ADC 527 pressed on only to founder with the loss of all twelve crew near to Burrow Head.

"The port of Cairnryan was an ideal....location from which to carry out  munition dumping operations....It was within comfortable distance of the area selected for dumping,  the Beaufort Dyke,  a chasm about midway between County Down and the south-west coast of Scotland.  This trench was about 7 miles long,  2 miles wide and 144 fathoms at its deepest point." Avoceta was torpedoed in August 1941. Travis died later from injuries or trauma associated with the loss of Avoceta and is listed among those buried ashore with full War Grave status.

The Avoceta operated the Liverpool, Casablanca, Lisbon and Canary Islands route with passengers and fruit cargoes. On her homeward run to the United Kingdom in September, 1941, carrying 88 passengers and 469 tons of general cargo, she joined the twenty-five ship Convoy HG-73 at Gibraltar. When the convoy was attacked by the U-203 north of the Azores on the 25th the Avoceta was hit and sank taking the lives of 123 souls (43 crewmembers, 4 gunners and 76 passengers.) Rescued by HMS Periwinkle were her master, Captain H. Martin, 19 crew, 7 naval personnel and 12 passengers. and taken to Milford Haven. Three others were picked up by the British ship Cervantes.

A bomb was dropped outside a Catholic School at Morpeth, Northumberland and Sergeant W.F. Glover went into the crater to defuse it and make it safe. The bomb had penetrated a disused coal mineshaft. Sgt Glover was overcome and died by carbon monoxide poisoning. Sapper A.E. Williams a member of the section donned his service respirator and attempted to rescue Sgt Glover, he also died from carbon monoxide poisoning as the service respirators were not suitable for this form of gas.
