About the cemetery

The cemetery is divided into three distinct denominations and each of them contains a number of different sections numbering twenty-nine in all:

Consecrated Sections 1 to 12 (although there is not a section 4) & A to D. These are the Church of England Sections.
General Sections 1 to 7. These are essentially the many non-conformist religions.
Roman Catholic Sections 3 to 11. Sections 1, 2, 4, 9 & 10 have not been               used.

Please note that the site only includes what is shown on headstones and does not comprise a register of all the burials in the cemetery. At the date of writing an index of the burials in this cemetery does not exist. The original burial registers for this cemetery are available for inspection on micro-film at the Liverpool Reference Library. The entries are just in date order so you will either need to know what you are looking for or you will have a lot of hard work. Up until the year 2000 when the micro-films end a total of approximately 122,812 burials have taken place in the cemetery. They consist of:

Consecrated Sections: 95,558 burials; 7,731 headstones
General Sections: 12,389 burials; 2,180 headstones
Roman Catholic Sections: 14,865 burials; 2,796 headstones
Total: 122,812 burials; 12,707 headstones

The first burials in each of the three denominations took place in February and March 1884.

A few notes:

The consecrated sections: the first interment according to the burial registers was on 2nd February 1884 and was of a Betsy Tomlinson MASON who was 38 years old and took place in section 10 grave number 493.
The general sections: the first interment according to the burial registers was on 7th February 1884 and was of a Mary Elizabeth DOOLEY  who was 1 year and 7 months old and took place in section 6 grave number 29.
The Roman Catholic sections: the first interment according to the burial registers was on 9th March 1884 and was of a a Lilian Agnes WHITFORD who was 2 years old and took place in section 11 grave number 436.
A note of caution. Whilst every effort has been made to ensure accuracy do not rely on what we have recorded. If possible check the inscription yourself. It is just too easy to make a mistake trying to read a photograph of a head-stone and type it up. Some stones are easier to read than others, shiny granite can be particularly difficult and a number of the stones have weathered badly. The few Welsh inscriptions have also proved particularly difficult - hopefully they are nearly right. It is also often difficult to distinguish numbers and dates. Errors will have occurred - if you find any please let us know.
