Caleb or Phillip (Dutch?) MILLER
Kansas
1874- 1880?

Caleb Miller (who may also have gone by the name of Philip or Dutch) was born in Hancock County, OH on 22 Apr 1865. He is in the 1870 Findley township, Hancock County, OH census with father Samuel (born 1839, OH), mother Lyda (born 1841, OH), Jacob (1866, OH), and Tomas (1870, OH). He said he was sent to Kansas when he was nine and was raised as an orphan (I think his father died in 1874, leaving his mother living with her brother, Ephraim Crow and her relatives, without her children, in the 1880 Hancock Co. census). I cannot find Caleb anywhere, under any of his names, nor can I find any siblings, from 1870 to 1886. Caleb said he had a brother Wilson, and a sister Cora. In 1886, Caleb married his first wife, Rosa Young, in Linden, Osage Co., Kansas. Family legend says Caleb grew up in Kansas. Was he in an orphanage, or raised by a family? I would greatly appreciate any hints or ideas.

Stafford
Mississippi

My great grandfather was John T. Stafford. He was born August 15,1879 and died in 1934 in Lee County, Mississippi. Family stories say that when he was between 8-10 years old his parents died. He and his younger brother Charles "Charlie" went to live with their uncle. He said that he didn't want them so he placed them in an orphanage. Charlie was adopted immediately. John never saw him again. John remained at the orphanage until he was a teenager and was adopted by a doctor near the town of Saltillo, MS. He was only adopted to work the fields. He searched Northeast Mississippi and Western part of Alabama for his brother throughout his life. I am trying to locate the name of orphanages in Mississippi and if someone can give me any leads I can follow. Thank you, Linda

KENNETH VAN DORN
Hakeman Hospital (NYC) / New York Foundling Hospital (NYC) / Orphan train to Arkansas
1899 / 1903

Need info/help on Kenneth VAN DORN. According to the letters I have, my ggrandfather was born July 20, 1899 at Hakeman Hospital in New York City. He was brought to New York Foundling Hospital on August 12, 1899 at 11:35 a.m. "by a woman who stated that she was his mother" and gave his name as such. She also stated that he was 23 days old. He was baptized on August 14, 1899 in their chapel by Rev. T. S. McGovern, O.P. On October 13, 1903, he was sent on the Orphan Train and placed in the foster home of Mrs. Mario(Mary)Geheb of Barling Co., Arkansas where he took her last name even though no adoption took place. Each letter he received over a 30 year span added more info. His birthdate and hospital were sent in the last letter. However, his SS# appears to have been issued in Okla where he was living. He told the family in the 1960's that he had hired an investigator. What was told to him was that his parents had died (possibly train wreck) and his uncle took him in, but could not keep him. I am unable to locate who the investigator was or any documents he might have given him. He did stop his search after that. If you can help a beginner with where to search or any info, I would forever be grateful!

BLAIR/FOLEY/MAHEUX
Stoneham MA/Holyoke, MA/Lewiston, ME
1896- 1920

I'm looking for information on both the birth parents and adoptive parents of my Grandfather Augustus Pierce Blair and his brother William Joseph Blair. They were both either adopted or fostered about 1906 and lived with their foster parents until they joined the army in 1918. Augustus Pierce Blair was sent to live with Philias and Marie Maheux in Lewiston (or Auburn), Maine. He was know as Walter Maheux while with the Maheux family but reverted back to his birth name later. It is believed he was a foster child and probably not adopted. William Joseph Blair was sent to live with a Foley Family in Holyoke, Massachusetts. We do not know if he was adopted or fostered. His name while he was with this family was William Foley. The last record I have for him was his draft notice. I do not know if he continued using his foster name once he left the army or also went back to his birth name. I would appreciate any information on how to find information on the possible services that may have been used to help with these placements and any places I can use to help with my present day search. Please send any responses to the e-mail address above with a copy to [email protected] Thanks for your time. Val Conway
