CLYDE GEORGE HOLMES JR./ VINCENT ILLAGO WILLIAMS
Chicago, Cook, IL
1916-17

Looking for family members of my deceased father. Birth name CLYDE GEORGE HOLMES (Junior). Adopted name VINCENT ILLAGO WILLIAMS. Born in Chicago on April 3, 1916 to ELSA LAVONNE WILLIAMS HOLMES. Dad was told she died a little while after his birth. There has never been any contact between my father and his paternal family. Have no idea as to why. He was supposedly adopted by his maternal grandmother a ALICE BERTHA WILLAMS. I have been unable to prove any of the relationships listed for my father's parentage. I have found Alice listed with Elsa on the 1900-1910 Chicago census. Have found Alice and my father listed as BENSON adopted son of ALICE WILLIAMS on the 1920 census in Woodburn, Marion, OR. Alice died July 19, 1932 in Salem OR leaving my father an orphan at 16 years of age. I don't know Alice's maiden name but Dad said he thought it was POPE. Also that he was suppose to have at least one half brother named ELLIOT. ELLIOT'S mother was supposed to have been a ESTELLA FORSYTE HOLMES. CLYDE Senior may have had a brother named HARRY. Dad also thought his father was from MA. I can't find any of these people. Can't find a birth, marriage, or death certificate for ALICE (who was supposedly married to a WILLIAM WILLIAMS who died about 40 year prior to her). No birth, marriage, or death for ELSA. No birth or adoption papers for my father VINCENT ILLAGO WILLIAMS. NOTHING on his father or paternal family. Any help would be appreciated. I'm wondering if ALICE kidnapped my father after the death of her daughter. She took him almost as far west as you can go from Chicago, knowing no one in Woodburn or having any family there. Long way to go (in 1917-1918) for a 59 year old woman on her own with a infant. Where was his father? Why no contact? Was Elliot older or younger? Sure needed that 1890 census!!! Thanks Arlene

Young, Youngs
Cass County Michigan, Saskatuwan Canada
born about 1893

Eddie Young was born some time after 1893. His mother Cora Hardy young, born 1869 South Bend Indiana was pregnant for Eddie when she left and divorced her husband, William H. Young in Newburg, Cass county Michigan. She had 3 older daughters, Nellie, Grace, and Pearl that she left with William. William boarded Nellie and Pearl out, he married again to Lucy Poe, kept Grace with him and had several more children by Lucy. Eddie was adopted out,and was in touch with his sisters after he was grown, he lived in Saskatuwan Canada at that time. I do not know where he was adopted or what his adopted name was. If anyone could identify Eddie would be happy to share the information I have on him. I Am also interested in the where abouts of Cora Hardy Young. Family tradition is that she married again to a man named Pitts and lived in Terre Haute Indiana. Cora was my great Grandmother and was only in touch with her daughters once after she left William.

Children's Home Society, Minneapolis/ST. Paul, MN
1916-1920?

Looking for any information about two HARDING sisters given up for adoption to Children's Home Society in Minnesota around 1916. They were born to ALICE & EDGAR HARDING---MARY WAS BORN 10/11/1910 & MYRTLE GRACE BORN 7/6/1915. When Children's Home was contacted, they said that the records had been destroyed. Because they had 4 brothers NOT put up for adoption, someone must have information about the situation. ARTHUR, CLARENCE, DANIEL, RAYMOND, are the brother's names. Their last known address was in High Forest township, Olmsted County, Minnesota in 1920. I would appreciate any help---thanks.

Schwartz
Edgeton Home- Baltimore, MD
1915-1920 (?)

My grandmother was put into a home for orphans and half orphans when she was about 8 years old along with a younger sister. Her father had just died and my gr. grandmother could not care for all the children. My grandmother had very fond memories growing up at "Edgeton or Edgedon" I don't know how to spell the name of the home. I do know that it is no longer around because the building was made into a sr. citizen's apt. complex. I would love to find out what happened to the records from this orphanage. I have yet to find anyone who know which one it is. I"m hoping that my grandmother got the name right. I do not even know the exact location in Baltimore. My grandmother was Ruth Schwartz and her sister was Elsie. Does anyone else remember this home?

BRADLEY
Greene County, Missouri, USA
1888-1900?

I am seeking information on my Grandmother, Addie BRADLEY, and her three brothers, (names unkown) other than BRADLEY. Their mother, Kate,(Catie) JENNINGS BRADLEY,(age 27) died Dec.1888 in Greene County, near Cove Springs, MO. Their father was James W. BRADLEY. The children were born, abt. 1880, 1882, 1884,Addie b. 27 July 1885, and the last child was born Dec. 1886. Following a search of Census records for Missouri 1900- 1910, no evidence of Addie or her siblings were found, nor James W. BRADLEY ,with any children. Addie was not found until 1907 when she was 22 and married Issac Denton DOBBS in Siloam Springs, AR> We are missing 13 years of her life and cannot find any information about her brothers. We feel that following the death of her mother, she was placed with her siblings, possibly in an orphanage in Missouri. Any information or leads would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

William L. Hannah
Mississippi, USA

Looking for info on William L. Hannah, b. 4-1-1855 probably NC and died 2-27-1920 in Smith County, Mississippi. Supposedly, Will and at least one brother came to Mississippi as orphans. I have been told that he was left with a doctor in Brandon, Rankin Co., Mississippi and that his brother went on to possibly the Delta region of the state. Also I have been told that he went to either North or South Carolina as an adult to visit a brother who owned an orchard. He sent fruit trees, etc. back to MS by train. Would like to find out who his parents and siblings were. His death certificate states under "parents" that he was "left alone as an infant". Thanks. (3-8-2001)

I am looking for information on the family of Joseph John Kestler and his 2 brothers, George and Peter. Their father's name was George Kestler and their mother's name was Josephine Mary Farrell Kestler. They were born in the Sullivan County, NY area: Joseph in 1905, George in 1908, and Peter in 1910 or 1911.Josephine died in child birth with Peter and George soon affter. The boys were placed in an orphan's home in Middletown, NY. Joseph, my grandfather, went to live with a family named Riggs or Riggsy sometime in his teens. Joseph died in 1952 when my mother was 6 and doesn't remember much. Joseph had an uncle William who was too young at the time to take the boys. He died in Pa. in the 1970's. Does anybody know the name of the orphan's home and where the records may have gone? All of this information is from my mother's older sisters and my grandfather's SS application. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am in search of an orphanage located in the Webster City area. My grandmother and I believe two of her sisters were there around 1916 after their mother ran off with another man and the father could not care for them. Flora Bell Souder
born in New Dover, Ohio; Union Co. Children's Home, Union Co. OH
1885; 1895

I am looking for information on my grandmother, Flora Bell Souder, born 26 Apr 1884. The information she had was that her father died about a month before she was born and that her mother died shortly after she was born. I discovered her mother's maiden name, Trowbridge, when I obtained a copy of her marriage license. She was raised by her maternal grandmother until she was 18 months old when she was placed in the Union County Children's Home, Marysville, Union Co. OH. At 18 months she was indentured to E. Crawford and Maria Hathaway Reed who lived in Haven, Tama Co. IA. At the age of 10 years (about 1895) she was sent back to the Children's Home because of the Reed's failing health. She was then adopted by Ambrose and Lucinda Barlow Woodruff. She stayed with them until she was 18 years old when she returned to the Reeds and took care of them until she married my grandfather, Elnathan Hathaway Whitmore. I am trying to find information on her parents but only knowing their last names is all the information I have. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

REYNOLDS
Tacoma, WA
1908-1910

My grandfather, Andrew Eugene REYNOLDS, was born 2-1-1908 in Tacoma, WA possibly in St. Joseph's Hospital. Family history states that A. Eugene was "adopted" by Agnes Jessie Kitch Reynolds and Harry J. Reynolds when he was approximately two years of age. My great grandmother and grandfather, originally from Mercer and Lawrence County, PA, lived on North Lawrence Street in Tacoma in 1910 (as referenced by a Tacoma Daily News clipping). Jessie REYNOLDS was a member of the Lawrence Street Sewing Club and Harry REYNOLDS worked as a freight conductor for the Pennsylvania Railroad. Evidently, Jessie first encountered my grandfather in a Catholic orphanage when he was two years old, and suffering from malnutrition and club feet. He may have been born to an actress in the area. It is my understanding that after my grandfather had corrective surgery he was united with my great grandparents. I don't know if there was a formal adoption proceeding. The Reynolds' returned to New Castle, PA where they lived out their lives. My grandfather learned, quite by accident, in the 1950s that he was not Harry and Jessie's biological child. It was after his death on 5-27-1983 that I requested his birth certificate from WA Vital Records. What I received was a Delayed Certificate of Birth listing only Jessie and Harry as his parents and stating that A.E. Reynolds was baptized in New Castle, PA in 1913. I have contacted (by phone) the St. Joseph Medical Center and was told that they have no records from the early 1900s. This is the newspaper clipping that I referenced above: Tacoma Daily News - 1910 An informal afternoon for the Lawrence Avenue Sewing club was given Thursday by Mrs. H. J. Reynolds at her home, 1011 North Lawrence Avenue, complimentary to a small group of club friends. The guests brought their needlework and spent a pleasant time chatting informally and discussing affairs of neighborhood interest. At 4 o'clock the hostess served refreshments in buffet fashion, assisted by members of the club. The rooms were charmingly decorated with garden flowers and late roses. Mrs. Reynolds' guests including Mrs. E. A Lynn, Mrs. Edward Grant, Mrs. B. R. Chester, Mrs. Rollo Dyce, Mrs. R. Thompson, Mrs. H. M. Duncan, Mrs. R. Wiley, Mrs. A. Bordeaux, Mrs. C. Lemaster, Mrs. John Lemaster and Miss Barbara Lynn. Any information on orphanges in the Tacoma,WA area during the early 1900s or any information at all regarding this post would be greatly appreciated.

Her name was changed to Nora Gertrude. We are not sure if she was born in Lincoln or if that's where the orphanage was. Any information, no matter how small, will be appreciated. SWANEY, SWEENEY
Allegheny County, Pennsylvania
1850

Searching for names of parents of my grandfather, David A. SWANEY. He was listed in the 1850 Manuscript Census of Allegheny County, Pennsylvania in an "Orphan Assylum", age 6, along with a sister, Melissa, age 5. It is believed there was also a brother, William, age 11, since he appeared in the same numerical sequence. The surname shown is SWEENEY, but it is felt this is the correct individual because of age and place; and from Civil War records it is known he had a sister, Melissa. My father never knew any aunts, uncles, cousins, or grandparents; and all siblings are no longer living. There are no living persons from whom I might find this information. David Swaney died in Kansas in 1911.

HANAN / HANNAN / HANNON
New York or St. Louis, Missouri
1880 - before 1900

I am searching for the parents and siblings of my Grandfather, FRANK H. HANAN/ HANNAN/ HANNON. His death Certificate, which has the spelling of HANUM, states that he was born 1880 in St. Louis, Missouri. Father-Unknown believed b. Ireland; Mother-Unknown believed b. Missouri; Family Lore is that FRANK was orphaned at a very early age and possibly sent to Kansas to work on the farms. No record has been located to verify this. Another record of one of his daughters Birth Certificates, indicate that FRANK HANNAN born in NEW YORK ?? FRANK H. HANNAN is first located on the 1910 Census for Ellis County, Kansas, married to a Sarah KUHN; No marriage record located. FRANK AND SARAH HANNAN Had the following children. Clarence b. 1900; Frank; Joseph; Roy Virgil; Robert Henry; Susan Francis; Thomas Eugene; Madge Roberta; Dorothy May; Kenneth Dale; and the twins Ona "Fern" and Ole LaVerne "Bud" Hannan, all born in Ellis & Reno County, Kansas. OLE LAVERNE "Bud" HANNAN is my Father. Now there is one factor in this HANAN / HANNAN / HANNON LINE that may help to lead to any possible connections. That is the fact that FRANK H. HANNAN had inherited a rare disease, known as HUNTINGTONS CHOREA or HUNTINGTONS DISEASE, as it is now known. This heritary gene is passed from Parent to child, with a 50/50 chance of the child inheriting the disease also. As of today there is still no known Cure. Several of FRANK'S children did inherit this disease and it is still going through this line. I "Thank God" that my Father "Bud" HANNAN was fortunate NOT to inherit the Gene and therefore HD has stopped in my line. Frank H. HANAN / HANNAN / HANNON died October 1 1937 in Clarinda State Mental Institution in Clarinda, Page County, Iowa. He is buried in Council Bluffs, Pottawattamie County, Iowa. This line has been extremely difficult to trace. "Thank You" for assistance you may be able to provide. It is greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Linda HANNAN Radcliff [email protected]

George Irving Grimsley
Lyon County, Kansas
1867-1900

Looking for confirmation or not if George Irving Grimsley was adopted. His d.o.b. 27 Oct. 1867, parents were John Smith Grimsley and Katherine Drake. I have seen in several sources that he was adopted by John and Katherine, i have also senn several sources that indicate he was their natural born son. What is somewhat confusing and leads me to believe in the possibility of his adoption are two facts: in a time when everyone else in my tree is having 10 kids, why did John and Katherine have only one, and why did they wait 7 years after they were married?

Walker, Victoria Marie
Allegheny Co., PA
1906 / 1913

Victoria Marie Walker was born on 8 Jan 1893 in Homestead, Allegheny Co., PA to Andy Walker and mother's name not known. Victoria was the 13th child. Her mother passed away a few weeks after Victoria was born. Of the 13 children, only two lived to adulthood. Victoria had an older brother, but I am not sure of his name (maybe Walter?). Victoria was about 13 when her father died in 1906,leaving Victoria and her brother without any family. Victoria grew up in an orphange in Allegheny Co., PA. She later married John Dasharion, had four children of her own, and moved to Michigan. I am looking for her mother's name. I am also looking for her brother's name, and hopefully reunite with the brother's family.

I am searching for sisters of MARY ELLINGSWORTH of Philadelphia, Pa. Apparently her parents, Lemuel and Elizabeth (Lizzie) Leahy Ellingsworth were too poor to care for the 4 daughters and placed these Catholic children in the nearest shelter which was a Quaker establishment called FRIENDS HOME FOR CHILDREN. Mary (or Marie as we knew her) had 3 sisters named MARGARET bn 1895, FLORENCE bn 1897, and CATHERINE (KATIE) bn 1899. My grandmother Marie was "farmed out" to Delaware. Her sister Margaret or Maggie went to New Jersey but I haven't been able to trace Florence or Katie. Their older brother, Lemuel,Jr.stayed at home with the parents as he was old enough to earn money to help the family. If anyone is or knows decendents of FLORENCE AND CATHERINE ELLINGSWORTH I would love to hear from you. Thanks in advance.

Riley/Reilly/Reily
London, Ontario, Canada
N/A

Children of Thomas Riley b.1822 md. abt 1864 to Mary Ann Clerk or Carmichael, lived in Downie Twp.,Perth, Ontario, Canada. Catherine Riley b. 6 May 1867 kept by father md. John Ellis. Luke Riley ca 1865 stayed with grandmother Margaret Riley & uncle Luke Riley. Other siblings were taken to the Catholic Home on Huron St. West in Stratford, Ontario, Canada, then transported to the Catholic Diocese on Windermere Avenue, in London, North, Ontario, Canada. I don't know how many children there were. I contacted the place and sent some money but they would not give their names, though they had them. They gave me instead names of Luke Riley's children, which I already had. They should be on one of the Census of London, Ont. Canada, but I have not found them. I would appreciate seeing a Canadian Census that gives the names of children in Orphanage Homes.

Hunt?
Rowan County, Kentucky

George McClellan Hunt was born (reportedly) in Rowan County Kentucky in 1866. The oral tradition says that his father died after an accident where an axe handle flew off and impaled his leg with subsequent sepsis and death. Hunt may be an assumed name. Reportedly, he was adopted out to a dentist in Kansas who abused him. He ran away and lived (we think this is where he assumed the name "Hunt")with another family. Eventually, he lived in Haysville, Kansas (1886), his last residence before marrying Sadie Maude Steadman and settling in Wichita, Kansas. He and Sadie had five children (May, Walter, Harold, Loyd and Roy). I am searching for any clues into his past - and real surname. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who might recognize this story. I would also appreciate any suggestions!

Rhodes, Rhoades
Ross County, Ohio
about 1885- 1890

Andrew Lewis RHODES (or RHOADES) and his brother Harley were placed in an orphanage in Ross County, Ohio, near either Chillicothe or Roxabell. I have no information on his parents, and would like to find out something. His father had either died or left, and his mother could not support her children. Once she got back on her feet, she returned for them. Harley was still there, according to the family story, but Andrew had already been adopted. He was raised by a family named Schuster, near Chillicothe.

Curl
Near Logansport, Indiana
About 1890-1900

My grandmother was Ruth Ella CURL, who was adopted by a family named NAVE, and she took that as her surname. I have no information on either her birth parents or her adoptive parents. She married my grandfather, Benjamin Franklin REED, who died in a railroad accident, possibly in Logansport, in 1917, leaving her with three small children, including my mother. The REED family took the children and two of the REEDs, Perry Wilmer and Don Francis, adopted the children. I don't know whether Ruth was ever actually placed in an orphanage, or the adoption was taken care of privately.

LEON WELLINGTON BOARDWAY
1889 to ?, ME, MA?; from ? to 1908, MO; and from 1908-1950 KS, Philippines, CA, CO, NE?, TX

LEON WELLINGTON BOARDWAY, b.1889, possibly Maine or Mass. Said he grew up in Augusta, Maine. Said his mother was born Breton France and spoke French; father born Maine. He would not discuss his childhood and did not even reveal the names of his parents. His wife said she thought he told her that his mother died when he was a child and that he had a sister. He left home sometime before 1908 and turns up in St. Louis, MO that year. He learned the WATCHMAKING trade sometime before 1908 and pursued it as a hobby throughout his life. He joined the Army in St. Louis in 1908, and named WILL PFEIFFER of St. Louis as his next of kin but acknowledged that Will Pfeiffer was not a relative. I am not confident of the details he gave in the records, because I know he fibbed about his age to join the Army. He also may have fibbed about his place of birth and possibly even changed his name. He seemed to be wanting to escape something bad from childhood. I have surmised that he was orphaned and would like to find out if that is the case. I know a lot about his life from about 1920 until his death in 1950. Want to find the identity of his family of origin, and would like to find descendants of any siblings he may have had. If this sounds familiar, please email: [email protected]

MOLEN
Adams County, OH or Lewis County, KY
1859- 1947

I'm looking for the parents of my great-grandfather, JASPER NEWTON MOLEN, born 3-Mar-1859 in Adams County, OH. Due to a courthouse fire there is no record of his birth. He died 13-Jul-1947 in Wheelersburg, OH. According to a marriage bond, his parents were both born in Lewis County, KY, but I do not know their names. Oral history is that Jasper was an orphan, and no one in the family knows any more about him. One of his sons thinks he was told that Jasper was raised in an orphanage in Adams County, OH, but I have not been able to find any records to substantiate this. Also, he supposedly knew that he had a brother, but never knew his brother's name. It's also possible that he was raised in Lewis County, KY, as it is just across the Ohio River from Adams County, OH. Does anyone have any information about orhpanages in these two counties? What about adoption records or foster homes? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Vermilion County Orphanage, Vermilion County, Illinois
1932- 1936

My dad, Wesley E. Ford, (born 1919) and 2 of his brothers spent 4 years of his life in this orphanage. His father died in 1929, leaving his mother to take care of 5 children. She developed cervical cancer, leaving her unable to take care of the kids by 1932, when she was placed in a hospital/nursing home at that time, until she died in 1939. My dad would often tell us stories of this orphanage, the one I remember the most was how much he grew to hate tapioca pudding - he said they would serve it to the kids, and it looked like little eyeballs in the pudding! Which I think is particularly funny, because my dad can eat anything and everything on this planet that is edible, but he won't go near tapioca pudding! Anyway, I'm looking for anyone that served their time in this orphanage, my dad is still alive, he's 81 years old, and I think he might like to correspond with fellow "inmates".

St. James Orphanage, Duluth, Minnesota
possibly 5-8 years?

searching for anyone who may be seeking information on St. James Orphanage, DuluthMinnesota, early 1900's. My father, Harry Dollan, his twin brother (name unknown)and a sister (name unknown)My father, Harry Dollan was born about August 1900, had likely been born in Montreal Quebec. His parents names may have been Martin and Marie LaVon Dollan. No addresses, birth or death dates. My father ran away from the orphanage at somewhere near the age of 12 plus. He road the rails and became a hardrock miner and spent his life doing that. His twin brother died in a boating accident at an early age, but have no dates. It may have been while he was at the orphanage or later. There was brief mention dad's sister at one point moved to California. My father's name may have been spelled phonetically (he only went through 3rd grade or so) or even changed. We do not believe he was adopted from St. James. I would like to hear from anyone who is doing any searching for records from st. James or has any knowledge of St. James Orphanage, Duluth, MN, while it was operational. Please contact me directly. Thank you

Richman, Hill
Detroit, Chicago
1922-1926

I am searching for information about my father, born 1922 as BABY BOY RICHMAN, birth mother listed as AMANDA FERRICKS RICHMAN.He was adopted (probably as an infant) by JULIA HILL and sometime prior to 1926 given up for adoption a second time. At that point he was listed as JOHN HILL. He always believed he was born and placed in an orphanage in the Detroit, MI, area but there is no documentaion of it. He was adopted a second time in 1926, through the Cook County Court system, but there is no record of the name of the orphanage where he was living at the time. I do not know if there were siblings.
