Dear MYRICK List,

Just wanted to send out a little information today.....bear with it as it a

tiny bit lengthy but still working on connecting dots as well as sharing some information that some of you may not have.

For those of you that are unaware, (and regarding the lineage of the Welsh royal lines of MEURIG/MEURIC/MEYRICK/MERRICK/

MYRICK/MIRICK out of Wales,) there is the following information regarding:

Richard AMERYKE/AMERYK/AMERIKE/Richard Ap Meryk, (a man who descends from the same MEURIG/MEURIC/MEYRICK/

MERRICK/MYRICK bloodline as did our ancestor, Meurig ap Llewellyn, (Personal Guard to and cousin of King Henry, VIII,)) ....and a variety of other spellings....and Richard AMERYKE/Richard ap Meryke was from Rhos - on - Wye on the Welsh border at Herefordshire, England. He was a very wealthy lumber merchant in Bristol, England and was a tax collector for King Henry VII.

Richard AMERYKE /Richard ap Meryke was a financial backer of the Italian navigator, John CABOT and supported him in his explorations. John CABOT set sail from Bristol, England in 1497, with authorization from King Henry, VIII. Three sons of Richard AMERYKE/Richard ap Meryke went with him.

On 24 June 1497 Richard AMERYKE saw Cape Breton Island and Nova Scotia becoming his discovery of the mainland of North America as the Vikings had discovered 600 years earlier and 300 years after another who descends from the same bloodline of the Richard AMERYKE/Richard ap Meryke and Meurig ap Llewellyn who was Prince MADOG/MADOC, (a Prince of Wales.) Prince

MADOG/MADOC was Welsh, Irish and also descended from the Viking's Nordic bloodlines as well.

Richard AMERYKE/Richard ap Meryke gained inspiration for his venture from Prince MADOG who is recognized for the trips that he made out of Wales from the port of Bristol, England into America with memorials at the locations where he began and ended his journey with the American location designation having been errected by the D.A.R.. The first trip that Prince MADOG made was an exploratory one that brought other sailors/countrymen with him and the 2nd trip brought settlers to the new land.

It is greatly thought by many historians these days that the actual name for AMERICA came from the name ap Meryk/AMERYKE from the information that came with Richard AMERYKE/Richard ap Meryke and calling the new land AMERYKE/AMERIKE County or something like that.

The breech with the Catholic faith by King Henry, VIII and the battling waged by Queen Elizabeth, I in 1588 as she prepared for the invasion of the Spanish Armada, (of which several of my ancestors were her financial backers for the engagement as well as being involved in the actual events,) and the other breeches that were between Spain and England at that time brought about great anymosities and, as is theorized by many at this time, may have brought about 'misinformation' about the actual source for the naming of AMERICA.

It is thought by many people today that it is much more likely that the name of AMERICA came from the wealthy Welsh explorer Richard ap Meryke/Richard AMERYKE and supporter of John CABOT, (with pronunciation from some regions of Wales actually sounding like the name of AMERICA with a hard K sound,) than the naming of AMERICA coming from the mapmaker who was an Italian named

Amerigo VESPUCCI. And the thinking continues that saying that the country was named for the mapmaker Amerigo VESPUCCI was a way for the Catholic country of Spain to usurp the efforts of Great Britain. Queen Elizabeth, I pursued this theory in one of her speeches on record.

There are many connections between our earliest forefathers and some of our Presidents and the royal lineage out of Wales including (President) George WASHINGTON and (President) Thomas (3) JEFFERSON. (President) George WASHINGTON descends from my ancestral grandfathers, Augustine WARNER, I, (son of (Sir) Thomas WARNER, (Governor of the Leeward Islands who journeyed there

with Samuel JEAFFRESON/JEFFERSON and his brother, (Captain) John JEFFERSON,) and Augustine WARNER, II, (both who were members of the House of Burgesses with Augustine WARNER, II being Speaker of the House.) (President) George WASHINGTON's father was Augustine WASHINGTON who owned land that adjoined

land belonging to my paternal 7th great grandfather, Samuel EARLE, I, (son of (Sir) John EARLE and his 1st wife, Mary YMONS/SYMONDS,) who married Bridget HALE, (thought to be the daughter of Thomas HALE/HAILES/HAYLES,) and after the death of Bridget, Samuel EARLE, I married his 2nd wife, (as her 1st husband,) who was Matilda/Matillda ALLERTON whom I believe may be the daughter of Isaac ALLERTON, Jr., (son of Isaac ALLERTON, Sr. and wife,

Feare/Fear BREWSTER, who arrived on the MAYFLOWER into New England.)

Isaac ALLERTON, Jr. married two Elizabeth's with one being Elizabeth

WILLOUGHBY whom I believe may be related to my paternal 7th great

grandmother, Mary WILLOUGHBY, whom is believed to be descended from Henry WILLOUGHBY and (Sir) Ambrose WILLOUGHBY and the Lords WILLOUGHBY of Parham, who were also involved in fighting the Spanish Armada.

After the death of Samuel EARLE, I, Mrs. Matilda ALLERTON (EARLE) married as her 2nd husband, William RUST, and then she married her 3rd husband, John BENNETT, another of my paternal 7th great grandfathers, through the marriage of his daughter, Phillis BENNETT, (either natural daughter or stepdaughter of Matilda,) who married Samuel EARLE, II, (stepson of Matilda,) who were the parents of my paternal 5th great grandfather, (Major) Samuel EARLE, III,

born: 1692 in Westmoreland Co., VA, who became the 1st Member of the House of Burgesses from Frederick Co., VA, holding the seat that would later be held by (General/Future President) George WASHINGTON.

Also, the RUST - ALLERTON descendants connect to my COX - LAMKIN - DEMOURVILLE maternal family lines and to my PAYNE - JENNINGS - EARLE - WILLOUGHBY family lines.

Also, in reference to (President) Thomas (3) JEFFERSON and the aforementioned Samuel EARLE, I......Samuel EARLE, I, (my paternal 7th great grandfather,) was also the landgrant partner of (Major) John STITH who married Mrs. Jane MOSEBY (GREGORY) (PARSONS) and they were the parents of Agnes STITH who married Thomas WYNNE, (son of (Colonel) Robert (1) WYNNE and his wife, Mrs.

Mary ?/SLOMAN? (POYTHRESS,) (widow of Francis POYTHRESS,) and Agnes STITH and Thomas WYNNE were the parents of (Colonel) Robert (2) WYNNE who married Martha JEFFERSON who was the daughter of Mary Martha BRANCH, (daughter of Christopher BRANCH, II, (son of Christopher BRANCH, I, (son of Lionel

BRAUNCHE,) (with proven descent from several Magna Charta Barons,) and his wife, Mary ADDIE,) and Mary Martha BRANCH's husband, Thomas (1) JEFFERSON, (son of the aforementioned Samuel JEAFFRESON/JEFFERSON.)

Mary Martha BRANCH and Thomas (1) JEFFERSON, (my maternal 11th great grandparents,) were the great grandparents of (President) Thomas (3) JEFFERSON,) who were my maternal 11th great grandparents and they are also the 10th and 9th great grandparents, respectively, of (President) George H. W. BUSH and his son, (President) George W. BUSH.

My continued descent from the JEFFERSON - BRANCH - STITH lineage continues through another of the BENNETT branches from Richard BENNETT, Sr. in 1600's Isle of Wight Co., VA and married into the BELL - TUCKER families with descent from Joseph Tudor TUCKER who married Lucretia WYNNE, daughter of the

aforementioned Martha JEFFERSON and (Colonel) Robert (2) WYNNE.

There are just so many connections between all of these aforementioned families that I descend from and the HARRIS family that married into the WEST, SMYTHE, JUDD, JOYNER, BROWN(E) families and that in other MYRICK connections shows up marrying into the MYRICK and JORDAN families that also married into the THORPE and other families. This JORDAN family also appears to connect to my JORDAN that married into my JENNINGS family but still pursuing information on that. And the TUCKER married into my COPELAND,

LEWIS, WARNER lineage that married into my PARKER that married my JENNINGS - EARLE lineage that married into my BILLINGTON - WILLIAMS lineage that married into my WILLIAMS - PEMBERTON lineage.......all of whom also have New England branches that were in strong leadership positions as well including (Rev.) Rodger WILLIAMS, founder of Rhode Island and later Governor who was the brother of my ancestor, Sydrach WILLIAMS, and they were the sons of Alice

PEMBERTON and James WILLIAMS.

There are numerous connecting features of royal bloodlines, Magna Charta Barons descent, Welsh lineage, involvement with Queen Elizabeth, II and fighting the Spanish Armada, The London Companies involvement with the early 1600's Colonies in Virginia, connecting branches of families in New England, Bacon's Rebellion, etc. that I think may, ultimately, lead us to more of the answers for the earliest MYRICK information from the brothers that were descendants of Meurig ap Llewellyn who sailed on the ship, "LITTLE JAMES,"

and brother, Thomas MERRICK, that many of us in the South descend from.

I keep throwing this information out periodically as I know that there are a lot of other 'clues' that are just 'lurking' out there waiting to be found but made more difficult because of a variety of reasons.

— From Bristol Times, June 19, 2001 —

It’s all in a name

The debate rumbles on about how America actually got its name. TOM HENRY reports:

WHAT’S in a name? Plenty, if you’ve lent your moniker to the richest and most powerful nation in the world – the United States of America.

History tells us, and has done for years, that the name of America came from one Amerigo Vespucci, a Florentine transatlantic explorer who was a navigator with Christopher Columbus in 1499, and the first geographer to realise that the Americas were separate continents.

But for some years now, this claim to the name has been in dispute.

And nowhere has the debate been hotter than in Bristol, from where it is believed that the true origins of America came.

Now, a new book by Bristol author Rodney Broome makes a compelling case for a West Country connection to the name of America.

He looks at all the myths, legends, half-truths and theories surrounding the story to create a convincing alternative explanation.

Broome’s book Terra Incognita – The True Story of How America Got Its Name presents the argument that America was named after wealthy Bristol merchant Richard Amerike, who was an overseas trader living just outside the city in Long Ashton.

In the book, the author acknowledges that while Vespucci played an integral role in the naming of America, he never actually took credit for the name for himself.

However, in 1507 map-maker Martin Waldseemuller prepared a world map almost entirely from Vespucci’s maps.

In this map, the word ‘America’ is written across South America. In later editions of the map, Waldseemuller tried to change the name to ‘Terra Incognita’, or ‘Unknown Land.’

So if the author is correct and Vespucci never claimed that he named America, where did he get the word ‘America’ from?

According to Broome the answer is simple – English fishermen visited Newfoundland long before Christopher Columbus or John Cabot crossed the Atlantic.

“Bristol merchants bought salt cod in Iceland until the King of Denmark stopped the trade in 1475,” he said.

“In 1479, four Bristol merchants received a royal charter to find another source of fish and trade.

“Not until 1960 did someone find bills of trading records indicating that Richard Amerike was involved in this business. Records show that in 1481, Amerike shipped a load of salt (for salting fish) to these men in Newfoundland and I believe the Bristol sailors named the area after the Bristol merchant they worked for – Richard Amerike.”

In addition, it is believed that Cabot’s famous voyage to the New World on the Matthew was directly financed by Amerike.

He calculated that Bristol merchants may be persuaded to take him across the Atlantic on an officially-sanctioned expedition.

The voyage would be useful for the merchants who were constantly seeking new trading opportunities and it is thought that Amerike, a senior member of the Fellowship of Merchants and a customs office, made an application for a licence for the trip.

Although the first voyage turned back at Iceland, the second, which started out from Bristol in May 1497, eventually landed on the east cost of America a month later.

Many believe that Cabot, grateful for the attention he received in England on completion of the voyage, named an island or territory after his sponsor.

Broome contends that Cabot used the name America for his map, a copy of which Vespucci obtained.

This was purely speculative, he says, until 1955 when a misplaced letter was found in the Spanish National Archives. The letter confirms that Bristol merchants had reached Newfoundland earlier, and also notes that John Cabot’s map was sent to Columbus.

Amerike, whose surname possibly comes from a corruption of the Welsh name ‘ap Meric’, also had a coat of arms which, if it is to be believed, is a third piece of evidence in the linkage with the USA.

Six vertical stripes form the background to a row of three horizontal stars, and the crest’s colours include red, white and blue. Is the obvious resemblance to the modern-day stars and stripes an amazing coincidence, or something more concrete?

Broome comments: “The question then becomes ‘why haven’t we heard of Amerike before?’ Columbus and Vespucci wrote extensively about their voyages. The Bristol merchants did not.

“They were businessmen and more concerned about preserving their trade secret: discovery of the fishing grounds off Newfoundland.

“I’ve always been disappointed that nobody in the US seemed even remotely aware of Amerike. Vespucci seems to have total market saturation. This is an important piece of history that people should be aware of.”

The man who inspired America?

A Bristol custom's officer is being heralded as the man after whom America was named, in a new book.

Rodney Broome says 'Amerike', as the continent was known in the 1500s, was not inspired by Italian explorer Amerigo Vespucci, as previously thought.

Instead he claims the country was named after Richard Amerike - the sponsor of John Cabot's voyage to the New World.

Amerike was a wealthy Welsh landowner and merchant trader who lived with his family in Long Ashton.

1486 he was made King's Customs' Officer and was encouraged by Henry VII to send his ships on voyages of discovery.

Broome's book, Amerike, The Briton Who Gave America its Name, suggests that America was named by John Cabot in 1496 - years before Vespucci's voyage.

According to Broome, the Bristol-based explorer was assisted by Amerike as part of his job as King's Customs' Officer and named the country after him out of gratitude.

Peter Macdonald, writing on the BBC History website, says Amerike donated more money than anyone else to funding the construction of Cabot's ship, the Matthew.

Also, he adds, as no wood was readily available nearby, oaks from Amerike's family estate in Wales were cut down and transported to Bristol to make his ship.

Secret maps

In his book, Broome goes on to reveal his discovery of papers in the archives at Westminster Abbey which suggest Vespucci and Columbus secretly used Cabot's maps on their voyage to find a trade route.

"As their fame grew and Cabot's declined, the misconception grew that it was they who had named the new land," said Rodney Broome.

Rodney Broome is Bristol born and bred but moved to the States in 1966.

He has written several books about how America got its name including 'Terra Incognita' in which he suggests that Richard Amerike shipped salt to Newfoundland and the Bristol sailors named the area after him in 1481.
