| Torres | Lt. Col. Amarante "Pete" Torres | Lt. Col. Amarante "Pete" Torres, U.S. Air Force (Retired), 79, of Sherwood died Monday, Jan. 4. A native of Del Rio, Texas, he attended school at the Masonic Home in Fort Worth, Texas. He earned his Royal Canadian Air Force Wings. He returned to the U.S. Army Air Corps after the United States entered the war; where he was an original member of the Flying Sergeants in the Army Air Corp. He was commissioned a second lieutenant and served with the 15th Air Force in Italy as an aircraft commander flying the B-17. During his career, he was the command pilot on 62 combat missions and was decorated with the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with three oak leaf clusters. He was recently honored at a dedication of the B-47 E Stratojet bomber on display at the Little Rock Air Force Base, honoring all aviators who flew the aircraft. Lt. Col Torres was the first original crew member to have his name engraved on a plaque near the craft. He was a member of the Community Christian Church in Sherwood, a 32nd degree Mason and Shriner and an avid golfer. Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Lucile (Poppy) Tores of Sherwood; two daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia and Howard Patterson Jr. of Little Rock and Kimberly Torres and Craig Richards of Atlanta.; one son, Peter David Torres of Memphis; two brothers, Frank Torres of Del Rio and Armondo Torres of Victoria, Texas; and three grandchildren.
