READ family: Micaiah Read (1820 - 1890) was a Wood Turner, then Policeman from St Pancras, London. His wife Louisa (nee Terry) (1823 -1912) was born in Aylesbury, Bucks. With Micaiah and Louisa were their six children: Edward born June 23rd 1844 (married Frances Haybittle in 1873), Micaiah born April 15th 1846 (had a birthday on board, married Ellen Whale - born 1855 in 1876), Frederick born January 1st 1848 (married Alice Brown - born 1857 in 1875), Louisa born August 2nd 1850 (married Walter Armstrong - born 1848 - in 1872), Anne.E. born April 16th 1855 (birthday on board married James Lomax - born 1855 - in 1879), Alice born December 9th 1856 (married Jeremiah Williamson - born 1847 - in 1878). After Alice, who was 2 months old when she was carried onto the Alma, they had 3 more sons, James Earl (b1860), Arthur John (b 1862), and Alfred Henry (b 1864). They settled in Wellington where Micaiah was appointed as Govenor of The Wellington Gaol in 1860, and he held the post until 1885 when he retired. He also was a rechabite teetotaler and formed the "Alma temperence society" in Wellington. Micaiah and Louisa were buried, (and reinterred) in the Bolton Street Memorial Park. The first 2 sons moved to the Rangetikei and Alice moved to Melbourne but returned to Wellington. The rest of the children stayed in Wellington and are buried in the Karori cemetery.
