| James HARVEY OBITUARY (February 21, 1894) One of the oldest and most respected settlers of this district, in the person of Mr James Harvey passed away at the residence of Mr R. McKenzie on the Fernridge this (Wednesday) morning. Mr Harvey was attacked with la grippe about three years ago, from which he never completely recovered. Being of an advanced age his constitution gave way, and he gradually sank until he expired as above stated. The deceased gentleman was one of the earliest settlers in the district. He was born in Ross-shire, Scotland and came to the colony in the ship Ashburton thirty-five years ago. He immediately made his way to the Wairarapa, and having had considerable experience with stock he was appointed manager of the station of Messrs Smith and Revens, in the Lower Valley. This position he held for some years, the station meanwhile falling into the hands of Mr Waterhouse. In 1864 he purchased a farm on the Opaki, on which he resided until a short while before his death. The deceased, who was 75 years of age, leaves a family of two daughters (Mrs R. McKenzie and Mrs. A.B. Murray) and four sons, besides innumerable grandchildren. The remains of the deceased will be interred in the Masterton cemetery on Friday. FUNERAL NOTICE The friends of the late Mr James Harvey, senior, are respectfully invited to attend his funeral, which will leave his son-in-law's residence at Fernridge, on Friday, February 23rd 1894, at 12 noon, for Masterton Cemetery. -T.
