City of Dunedin
Ship: 1085 tons
Captain:
Surgeon Superintendent:
Sailed Glasgow 25th March 1876 - arrived Lyttelton 1st July 1876
This fine vessel, prior to the
amalgamation with the Shaw Savill Co., was owned by the Albion Co. She was a typical
emigrant ship of 1085 tons register, and was built specifically to carry passengers from
the Clyde to Dunedin. The accomodation was in the 'tween decks, the space being divided
into three by bulkheads, single women being in the after compartment, married amidships,
and single men in the forward compartment. The City of Dunedin completed ten voyages to
Port Chalmers, direct from Scotland.

William Thomson: William Thomson was a passenger on the City of Dunedin departing Glasgow March 25th 1876, arriving Lyttelton on July 1st 1876. He was my grandfather, and grandson of John Thomson who fought on the Bellerophon in the Battle of Trafalgar. William was born on 2 August 1855 in Sound Lerwick, Shetland Islands and left there at the age of 20 for a new life in New Zealand. He came on the City of Dunedin as an assisted immigrant and ship's records show that on arrival in Lyttelton he "left the ship". Eventually made his way to the North Island, where he later married my grandmother, Elizabeth Hooper in the Wellington Registry Office on 20 September 1886. It is believed that the Registrar has written down William's surname as he would have spelt it - "Thompson", and that is how it has stayed ever since.William and Elizabeth settled in Waikanae as one of the very early settlers there, where William worked as a bushfeller. They had a family of 8 children, some of whom were original pupils of Waikanae school. William died on 28 October 1910 of Carcenoma of the stomach. Captain of the City of Dunedin was Mr.G.Andrew. Also on the passenger list was Christopher Brown (on your list) and Ann Brown, aged 38, Domestic Servant (not on your list), both from the Shetland Islands. If you have a connection with this family or would like to know more please contact Robert Thomson. |
