STEWART family:
Daniel Stewart was born in 1815 at Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland. He was married in 1839 at Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland to Catherine McDairmid who was born 1815 at Killen, Perthshire, Scotland. They came to Nelson, NZ in 1856 on board the "Cresswell" along with their 7 children; Elizabeth [Betsy]. James, Margaret, Catherine, Jessie, William Robertson & Campbell Colquhoun. They settled in what was called "The Wood" area, and is still referred to that to this day in time. Daniel’s occupations over the years varied, but the main one was as a Rabbit catcher, one that he was also employed at in Scotland. Daniel & Catherine died within a short time of each other - Catherine in February 1894 and Daniel in July 1894. They are both buried at Wakapuaka Cemetery, Nelson, New Zealand. MAY family:
William May was born in 1831 in Wandsworth, Surrey, England. He married Elizabeth Jane Winter who was born 1835 in the same place as her husband. They arrived on the "Cresswell" to Nelson NZ in 1856 and went on to have 7 children; Elizabeth Jane (born 1858), Millison Shaw (born 1860), William James (born 1862), Mary Ann [Emma] Ellen (born 1864), Ellen (born1869) and George (born 1871). Little is known of this families life in NZ as the parents died very young, William in 1873 at the age of 42 and Elizabeth Jane in a Lunatic Asylum in 1875 at the age of 40. Apart from the eldest daughter, the rest of the family were put in an Orphanage in Motueka, Nelson, New Zealand. A short life for the parents in a new land. If you have a connection with this family or would like to know more please contact Catherine Anderson.
