This was the first migrant ship sailing to New Zealand from Scotland, fourth from the U.K. Built in Calcutta 1812, 478 tons. Previous voyages were India 1820, Madras 1822, N.S.W. 1829, Madras 1831, N.S.W. 1835, 1836, 1838. The N.S.W. voyages were all with convicts. N.Z. 1839-40. There is a blank until 1852 when she arrived in Melbourne from London in september.

112 days voyage Glasgow to N.Z. A four month diet without fresh meat or vegetables The ship was chartered by the New Zealand company,

and had a very big send off from Glasgow, Lord provost etc involved.

Dr Logan was described as surgeon superintendent and naturalist.

All three moved to make room for a motor way to a common grave in 1969.

Francis owned 700 acres at Porirua (farming) and 2 acres in Wellington..

He had a Webb St. Wellington, address in 1854/55.

Dr. Logan was accompanied on the Bengal Merchant by Alexander Scott, his ploughman!

Houston Logan. Worked initially in a provisions store with an uncle, Robert Wallace. Another uncle, George Paxton Wallace, who had also been on the Bengal Merchant, was drowned when the "Maria" was wrecked in 1851 en route from Lytellton to Wellington.

Houston Francis, was in business in Cuba St. and Lambton Quay from 1866 to 1884 when he retired. Address is 36 Brougham St. He represented Te Aro Ward from Sept. 1887 to Sept. 1893.

Occupation retired gold miner at time of death. He was founder of the Star Boating club in Wellington. Alexander Turnbull of library fame, and J.E. Fitzgerald, one time MP and cabinet minister, also wit and eccentric were also members.

He took part in the Mahakipawa gold rush, being in the first party to leave Wellington! As part of his council work, he was responsible for a lot of planting of trees in the city. Pirie St. The Basin, Newton Park, Queen's Park, and Thorndon.

Houston was commissioned in the Militia during the Maori Wars, an account of his activities survives in some letters he wrote to relatives in Scotland at the time.
